Size of Mount:           9 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches

Condition:                 Medium tonal image, light rubbing, light color to cheeks with penciled in eyes, well worked background and clothing, mount shows aging with clipped corners & stains, photographer’s blind stamp can be read backwards on verso.  Image and mat are glued together.  Original frame appears to have been stripped at some point.

Other:                        Handsome early painted salt print portrait of a woman in white bonet by Charles W. Grey. 

Craig’s Daguerreian Registry notes, “Charles W. Grey as a daguerreian.  In 1855 he was listed in Albany, N.Y., at 496 Broadway.  Hew was the first to list himself as a ‘photographer’ in the directory.  Possibly the same as Charles W. Gray (Grey), listed in New York City from 1856 to 1860.  There, in 1856, he was listed at 371 Broadway, in partnership as Battell (M.C.) and Gray.  In 1856-1858 he was listed at Hudson Street.  In 1857-1858 he was listed at 371 and 407 Broadway, in business as Gray and Co.  In New York City the correct spelling is ‘Grey’; an invoice from the firm confirms this.”
