This WWII-era brass plaque commemmorates the winning of the battle of Bastogne by the 101st Airborne.  The NUTS on the plaque refers to General Anthony McAuliffe's one-word reply to the Germans when asked to surrender (Nuts!).  Forever after, he was known as General Nuts McAuliffe.  Wikipedia has a very entertaining account of that exchange of messages, in the entry for Anthony McAuliffe.    This original was obtained by my father while he was stationed in occupied Germany, 1946-1948.  It's solid brass and probably weighs most of 1 pound.

I've taken several close-ups of it so you can see some of the details:  there are tiny parachutes engraved, referring to the 101st Airborne's arrival in Normandy on D-Day.  There's a church in the middle, with little houses all around it.  There's a German soldier handing a piece of paper to an American soldier, who has his hands in his pockets, refusing to accept the demand for surrender, which American flag behind him and the German symbol behind the German.  The top of the plaque reads "Airborne", "NUTS", then "Dec. 44".

About my sales:  My father collected many things over his life.  He was stationed with the U.S. Army in postwar Germany, and later spent years as a buyer for Billups gas stations in the southern U.S.  I inherited most of these when he passed away.  Now that I am retiring, I am downsizing these collections.  I do my very best to describe and photograph each item accurately, including the story behind each, if I know it.

I accept Paypal only.  Payment must be received no later than 72 hours from the auction’s end.  At that point an Unpaid Item Case will be filed.  I ship your item, carefully packed, usually within 48 hours of receiving your payment.  I do not accept returns. This item is sold as-is, so please review the photos carefully.  I only sell to buyers whose feedback rating is 99% or higher.  If you are the winning bidder, and your feedback rating is lower than 99%, I will cancel the sale and offer it to the next-highest bidder who has a 99% feedback rating.  If an item sells for more than $100.00, I will purchase USPS insurance when I ship it.  In that case, if the item arrives broken, I will need you to e-mail pictures of both the item and its packaging, to show any damage during shipping.  Thank you for your interest, and please contact me with any questions.
