Up for sale is an antique refinished high dome barrel stave trunk. The barrel stave trunks are some of the earliest of the trunk designs made here in America. This one has a patent date of 1869 on the lock which was made by the Star lock co. of Philadelphia. Sorry no key. The trunk's dimensions are 32X20X27 high, plenty of room for blankets, throws or whatever. This trunk would stand out in any room but I'd definately put it where it would draw conversation. The trunk has four coats of sealer on the exterior and three coats on the interior. That extra coat just seems to make the finish more complete. The trunk comes with the original tray. This one however is quite unusual in that it has two lids made of wood that close towards each other and lock together. Most trays, if they have a lid are made of cardboard and seldom do you see this design. The tray originally was covered with a linen material in poor condition. This material served as the 'hinge' for the lids and when this was removed I fashioned hinges from some old leather taken from another trunk. The tray was originally made from wood taken from the sawmill right to the assembly location so it was pretty rough wood which I sanded but still left the saw marks which allows the tray to retain its antique character. The original lithograph remains in the inside of the trunk lid. New leather handles have been installed under the cast handle caps. Only two caps were on the trunk when found but I found two that match (a little smaller size) with the rays of the sun design. Notice in the pics that there are several spots that have been filled because of dings that are a little deeper than I like to leave. Also a previous owner made a home made handle on one side that caused damage that had to be repaired with some filler. There are two additional items on this trunk that make it even more unusual. First the two bands of iron across the middle of the trunk are usually just tin which certainly adds strength and character. Secondly, the latches are of a design I've never seen. Notice on pic #one the little wheel on the latch. Turn to the left to latch and to the right to open. Very cool. All told this is a wonderful trunk with a great rich golden oak color that will bring compliments from any visitors. This is a trunk for the home owner that chooses class over sparkle. I ship to the lower forty-eight by Grayhound bus so check your nearest station before buying.
