This is an ancient Roman Glass ashtray, from when ashtrays were still politically corect. The glass is ~2,000 years old, and the piece is hand made in Israel. The glass is found in archeological digs, mainly in Casserea where the Romans had a glass factory making wine bottles. By Roman law the bottles were clear as to see the wine inside. Over time the elements changed the color to a blue green color with bits of sedement and iridecence. The glass in this piece is very good quality judging by the great colors and sizes of pieces in tact. The top part is actually the bottom of a bottle. The jeweler who works with the glass must be authorised by the antiquities department in the Israel museum. The name of the artist is ISRAEL SHONEM, he is a Yemenite Israeli, who learned the silver smith trade from his father and graduated from B't Avni school of art in Yaffa, Tel Aviv. The Israel Museum in Jerusalem has done exhibitions of the artists work and his jewelry and judaica artifacts can be found in upscale galleries around Israel. A certificate of authenticity will be provided with the piece. This is amazing stuff.. A great family heirloom I purchased stock from a retiring shop owner in Israel. This piece would sell for quite alot more in a gallery in Israel if you could find one since the subject is rare and the glass is a better quality than what you could find today. The Roman Glass is becomming more scarce now and the quality in size and color is not as good today as in older pieces. This piece comes with a certificate of authenticity. |
