NO RESERVE AUCTION!!!
This NO RESERVE auction is for a Yoruba
Shango Dance Wand. These wands are intended as an object to be carried by
worshippers loyal to the god Shango, especially during celebrations that champion him, and are considered one of the most important pieces of art in the Shango cult. In the canon of Yoruba mythology,
Shango, or Sango, was once a mortal king, and an ancestor of the Yoruba people.
He was considered to be an extremely powerful, and often violent ruler,
capable of producing thunder and lightening. This power, however,
eventually resulted in his death, which came through the accidental destruction
of his own palace with lightning. His followers believed that after his death, he became a deity. Wands or staffs such as these typically depict a follower of
Shango. The colors red and white, sacred to Shango, often embellish the carving and are procured from natural pigments.
This piece features the common kneeling female worshipper theme, beautifully pigmented on a short, stout handle. This figure bears the traditional headdress of the Shango cult, a double-bit axe, which is large and prominent on this piece, terminating in a tall, age worn point. The woman is depicted in full garb, holding an offering in the kneeling position, a serene expression on her face. The wand is nicely pigmented, and has scarifications clearly represented on the face of the carving. A fair amount of pigment, though heavily faded and worn with age, still remains on the piece, and its condition is fairly good, with minimal damage, though age related wear should be considered normal (see photos for details, and never hesitate to ask questions!). The piece does display typical age and wear related marks, including minor age cracking, dings, scratches, etc, and the point at the very top of the headdress has a small crack around the base, but appears structurally stable. This is a reasonably tall wand, and it will surely please this auction's winner!
An interesting fact: Shango is the god of thunder and lightning. Fittingly, the territory the Yoruba occupy experiences one of the highest incidences of thunderstorms in the world, second only to Java!
Dimensions are 21" tall x 4.5" x 2.5". It weighs one pound.
MEDIUM: Wood, Pigment
