From the maker of exceptional drum hardware and drums....
I know it looks different, but when I look at the new Yamaha Direct Drive ($199.00 BTW!), the only difference I see in the mechanical design is that the pain in the neck hoop clamp has been redesigned. The original one on this, required use of the on-board tool to tighten an allen bolt -- half turn at a time!!
So I replaced it with a simple wing bolt...and the only negative feature was gone!
Other than that, I can't see a difference except in appearance. The new pedal is the "DFP-9500D", and Yamaha's site describes the features:
The DFP-9500D is a direct drive double pedal, with a solid cast link between the rocker shaft and the footboards. The direct drive "pushes" the footboards back on rebound, giving the pedal a quicker response. Many drummers that play heel-down prefer the feel of a direct drive. The DFP-9500D has adjustments for beater angle, footboard angle, and spring tension. The pedal frames have stabilizer bars cast into them below the rocker shafts to eliminate flex. This keeps the bearings in alignment and gives the pedal a smooth feel.
Okay, and then for the heck of it...because I'm a gear freak, I wanted to try the "Cobra Coil" from Tama. It was then that I encountered the quality of the steel in the base plate! Yikes! But I did get it mounted, with two Phillips head machine screws. Does it help?? Can't tell for sure without a side by side, but the pedal really does play great! It is adjusted to the middle position -- the only issue is that to adjust it fore and aft, the two screws have to come out to remove it - it adjusts with a drum key. I could NOT figure out a way around it!
If you don't like it, two screws and it's gone.
I also had to move the onboard tool mount to make it fit on the base...so there are two holes in the base.
This has been my favorite pedal for years...it is a beautifully designed and manufactured piece of gear. A VERY cool pedal with dynamite features....and a bonus!
