I have now tapped a part of my storage units that have boxed up computers I haven't seen for at least 15 years. Many of these I forgot I owned, and A few I can't find ANY information about on the internet (check my other items).

Up for auction is a used Apple II J-plus computer, with the keyboard that has the Katakana characters on them. Someone has also integrated a videx videoterm card into the unit, which I didn't want to pull to fully test the unit out. Unit turns on, I get the usual random screen of question marks as I don't have any disk drive's hooked up.

The monochrome monitor does NOT come with the auction - I use it only to test the machines.

Due to the age of this computer, I can make no guarantee's that this machine will function at all when it arrives. Please realize when you bid on one of my auctions, you are bidding on a museum piece, not a functioning computer. I know I've stated this over and over, yet I've had many auction winners expect a fully functioning 30 year old computer for $20. This particular computer is heavy - my apologies for the shipping fee's, but I ALWAYS encourage pickup - so much so, that I'm willing to meet a buyer in the Chicago-land vicinity for delivery.

I will be listing several dozen computers over the next few days,Check out my other items!

I am in the processes of emptying out several storage facilities I housed my old computer collection. Keep an eye on my auctions as I often sell rare, one of a kind items you are unlikely to see again. Thank you to all of the buyers out there I have already done business with - well, my wife thanks you :> I am hoping to finish by the end of March.

From Macgeek.org:

Apple II j-plus

These are images of an Apple II j-plus model I found on Yahoo Japan and other sources on the Internet. I would give credit to the photographer/owner of these photos, however I can't read Japanese worth a darn!

The j-plus is probably the rarest model of the Apple II. People may argue that the original Apple II is rarer than the j-plus, but that's their opinion. There weren't too many of these units sold in Japan, and there isn't that much information (especially information written in English) available on-line. However, here's what I do know...

The Apple II j-plus was announced in Japan on July, 1980. Based on the Apple II Plus, it included what one source called the "j-plus ROM" (similar in function the the Apple II Plus' AUTOSTART ROM), and the ability to display the Katakana character set. The key caps on the keyboard also included the Katakana character set. The original retail market price in Japan was 358,000 yen. The j-plus model was not successful, as it didn't fit that well in terms of business applications. One source says that about 2000 units were sold overall.

I'd like to find out more information about the j-plus. I'm especially curious about the keyboard ROM and the D0 thru F8 ROMs, as well as information on any software written that utilized the Katakana character set capability of the j-plus. One source said that the j-plus could not run standard Apple II software seeing the ROMs were different (he also mentioned that swapping the ROMs with the U.S. ROMs would make it work, which tells me that the logic board is functionally identical to the U.S. model).

Front view of the j-plus unit. Notice the roman characters on the top of the keys, while the Katakana characters are on the front.Inside of the j-plus. Everything looks the same from the inside. There's no way in telling whether or not the power supply is the same as the U.S. version.Another view of the inside of the j-plus.

Close view of the keyboard, showing the Katakana characters. The keys are of the glossy smooth finish, similar to the earlier Apple II/II+ models.
