Wooden Fuse (ca 1671)

This is an extremely RARE and AUTHENTIC sea salvaged Wooden Fuse handmade for an Iron Hand Grenade. It was recovered from the waters off the coast of Portobello, Panama.  Portobello is the area known to contain the ship wrecks of Henry Morgan's Pirate Fleet of 1671.

Fuses like these were often kept in a separate bag and were driven into the grenade just before the grenade was to be used.  The grenades were made from sand-castings and were equipped with wooden fuses like this. The fuse was usually made of maguey wood, and was 3" to 5" long with a small diameter hole running through the length that was packed with powder which acted as the powder train.

These fuses have been underwater since 1671 and all traces of any combustible materiel has long since vanished. They are 100% inert and have been conserved and finished in the proper manner to insure they will last for many generations as a rare and wonderful piece of authentic maritime pirate history.
