Item specifics

Used: An item that has been used previously. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of ... Read moreabout the condition

Blade: Nice Koto or Shinto (1550s to 1750s) Wakizashi with 19 3/4" blade. The temper line appears to be a cross between billowing (doran) and choji midare (small teeth) and is basically small billowing clouds.  The temperline extends about 10mm above the cutting edge at its highest.  The point (kissaki) is a solid temper (ichi-mai) which stretches back along the top edge of the blade. The blade is the thickest under the habaki which which means that this was originally made as a wakizashi and is not a shortened sword.  The blade has a deep curve (sori) to it.  The tang shape is single beveled (kata-yamagata) and has horizontal file marks (ichi-monji).  The single peg hole (mekugi-ana) is punched.  The blade is razor sharp and is in excellent polish.  There is no signature nor is there a date on the tang.

Fittings: The handle mountings (fuchi/kashira) appear to be Higo school, handachi style mounts and are black iron with gold inlay.  The habaki is a brass "fence".  The menuki are very nice and thick (stand out 1/4"), they are a spear (yari) and halberd (naginata) design and are also blackened iron with silver and gold inlay.  White ray skin covering on the handle with perfect brown cloth tie.  The tsuba and seppa are not tight firrings and are probably later additions to the sword.  There are 4 seppa.  The tsuba is an open black iron pattern with mums.

Scabbard:  The scabbard is wood with a leather cover with one suspension loop which is nickel plated. There are 2 snaps on the top of the cover and one snap for a retaining loop on the other side.. There is no retaining loop on the sword.  There is also an olt paper tag glued to the scabbard with black writing on one side and red writing on the other side.  I don't know what it says.

This is a very nice wakizashi.  Other pictures are available upon request.  Please send your email address so I can attach photos.  Sword will be sent fully insured, priority mail, with tracking.
