You are bidding on an AMAZING and 100% ORIGINAL WW2 Manometer (Depth Pressure Gauge), as used on the 1935 Italian Glauco Class Submarine!  This specific gauge was recovered from "Otaria" by an Italian Submarine commander, shortly before she was scrapped in 1948.  I will provide further details to the winning bidder.

The Glauco-class was a class of two submarines built by CRDA in Trieste for the Royal Italian Navy (Regia Marina). The submarines had initially been ordered by the Portuguese government in 1931, but were finished for the Regia Marina when Portugal cancelled the order. Both boats were launched and commissioned in 1935, and both boats saw action in the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War.  Otaria was surrendered to the Allies in 1943 and used as a target by the Royal Navy in Malta until it was sent to the Junkyard in 1948.

Manufactured between 1935 and 1943 by Curioni & Garbarino, this item is an EXTRAORDINARILY RARE instrument and indicates the depth in meters.  Made of brass and aluminum, it is in EXCELLENT used condition, and shows normal wear and patina from being over 70 years old.  Some marks and scratches, and the face is slightly worn due to the age (probably due to humidity), however all information is clearly legible, indicating:

Metri d'acqua di Mare

(Meters of Seawater)

Though I am not sure of it's exact location, I have indicated similar gauges in the last photos.  Measuring appro.x 8" in diameter, it is on of only a handful in existence.  A SUPERB item, and would make for a PERFECT addition to any Navy or Axis U-Boat collection!

The submarine Otaria was originally built by the C.R.D.A. shipyard of Monfalcone on behalf of the Portuguese Navy.  Eventually, upon the cancellation of the contract by the Portuguese, the Italian Navy took over ownership, receiving the unit on October 20th, 1935.

Having returned to Italy, at the beginning of WW2, the Otaria was assigned to patrol areas in the western Mediterranean. Soon after, the unit was selected as one of the boats to be relocated to the newly established Atlantic submarine base of Bordeaux.   Departure took place on September 23rd under the command of Lieutenant Commander Giuseppe Vocaturno.

Throughout the war, she occasionally worked along side German U-Boats when attacking various allied convoys.  Unfortunately, due to suffering from numerous mechanical and hydraulic problems throughout her career, she was only credited with one sinking.

On the day of the Italian unconditional surrender (September 8th, 1943), the Otaria was in Fiume .On October 6th, the Otaria returned to Italy and was assigned to Taranto (under British occupation) where it was used as a training target until the end of the conflict. Soon after, it was removed from service and later sent to the junkyard where she was eventually scrapped.

------------------- ABOUT ME -----------------

Although my passion is the Me109, I do offer many other German Aircraft (Fw190, Me262, etc.), as well as USAF and Japanese items. Occasionally I do offer many non-vintage items such as prints and art relating to the time period. As a private collector myself, I am constantly on the lookout for historical memorabilia, authentic photographs, artwork or anything unique relating to military aircraft. If you are looking for anything specific and cannot locate it, feel free to contact me as I probably have it or at the very least, a contact who does!
