**** ~~~ Circa early 1950s Tony Burmek Wisconsin Musky Guide FIRST MODEL Sucker color 2-pc Muskie Lure ~~~ TONY BURMEK SECRET BAIT 7-1/4" Muskie Lure with "Patent Pending" Printed Lure Box and Tony Burmek historic Musky Photo Illustrated Cover FIRST MADE Lure Box ~~~ The TONY BURMEK SECRET BAIT was Designed and Manudactured by TONY J. BURMEK, 473 North 15th Street, Milwaukee 9, Wisconsin ~~~

Sometime in the late 1930s, Wisconsin expert musky fisherman TONY BURMEK became inspired and long-term dedicated to originate and perfect his own uniquely different handcrafted Musky Lure. Living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin -- Burmek, was definitely hooked on musky fishing. He eventually began spending his summers and fall working as an experienced, time proven successful Musky Guide in Northern Wisconsin musky waters. During those many years of musky fishing, Burmek continued to study how muskies reacted to his hand crafted concept muskie lure he called his SECRET MUSKY BAIT. For 17 years Burmek continued to field test, improve and perfect his musky lure while personally fishing muskies in Northern Wisconsin plus hiring out as a professional Wisconsin Musky Guide. Finally Burmek was convinced he had perfected what he considered to be the best musky lure he and his clients could toss at muskies. During the final field testing period of his Secret Musky Bait before he began commercial production of his SECRET MUSKY BAIT Lure in the early 1950s, Tony Burmek managed to hook 42 muskies in 12 days using the SECRET MUSKY BAITwith 17 of those Muskies trophy size fish weighing from 25 to 43 lbs. The historic detailed story of his remarkable Wisconsin Musky fishing feat using his SECRET MUSKY BAIT Lure was later featured in "OUTDOOR LIFE" magazine.

"TONY BURMEK SECRET BAIT" plainly appears as molded raised letters on top of the fork-shaped tenite tail piece. This 1950s circa 7-1/4" 2-pc jointed lure body has a maximum 1-1/4" width at the front where the diving lip was formed as part of the tenite lure head. The White painted flat bottom style front body has painted Silver Scale pattern flat sides with a gently rounded Solid Black painted back. The fork-style down-turned curved tail piece has a maximum width of 2" at the split forked tips. The eye-screw hinged swinging forked-tail piece has the same matching painted finish -- Black Back, Silver Scale Sides with Solid White bottom. Early Wisconsin lure collectors believed the three rust-proof 1/16" diamenter bronze wires were neatly looped shaped to form the line tie, hook hangers plus hinge join the body to the tail. Each extra sturdy thick wire thought to be custom made by Burmek so the 3 pieces of wire could be properly inserted into the lure molds to be a permanent part of the body pieces mold formed. It was thought One pre-bent wire inserted in the tail mold was preshaped to be the tail hook hanger plus hinge join the tail piece to the long lure body. The Second wire piece was inserted in the rear of the lure body to form the rear body hinge plus become the mid belly hook hanger. The Third wire piece was inserted in the front nose portion of the body to form the line tie and serve as the front hook hanger. Rumors circulated among collectors during the 1960s and 70s that a few heavy fishing used BURMEK SECRET BAITS were tackle box found damaged because one of the double eye wires imbedded in the tenite lure body broke free from the hard plastic body and were lost while a muskie fisherman was fighting a huge Musky. Decades ago I heard those stories, but never did I personally see a Type I Burmek Lure body with any of the bronze wires missing because they had broke off or pulled out of the lure body. Over the years I did inspect a few damaged Type I Secret Baits tackle box found that apparently cracked or broke off a piece of the hard plastic lure body upon a cast when the lure body likely crashed hard against a rock, dock, stump, log or boat with enough force to crack or shatter the tenite lure body. A few damaged Secret Bait Lures tackle box found also looked "crush damaged" because someone stepped on the lure or something heavy once exerted enough force to break apart or cause wide cracks to appear in the hard plastic lure body. Those few broken Burmek Type I lures I handled decades ago appeared to me to always have been damaged by a fishing mishap. Teeth marks, typical casting dings, friction scrapes, or hook pointers and hook drags were commonly found on muskie fishing used lures. I never saw a broken Secret Bait showing serious damage likely caused while fighting a huge hooked musky. It is always possible any muskie lure could fail under the right conditions from maximum stress while fighting a genuine huge musky. If anyone did find a damaged Burmek Secret Bait with a pulled missing hook and upon close inspection was led to believe a hook hanger did cleanly break free from the plastic body, that could have been possible. After seeing and personally handling dozens of hard fished Original Type I Burmek Secret Baits over many decades, my first thought would have been a fisherman had managed to permanently snag the lure and exterted enough force trying to free the lure to have pulled the snagged hook out of the lure body while using very heavy musky line rated in the 50 lb. to 100 lb. test line as many oldtime musky fishermen sometimes did use.

Decades ago Wisconsin's few active Early lure collectors during the 1960s and 70s were led to believe Burmek redesigned his FIRST MADE Original Early 1950s made Type I Secret Bait lure body to be remade as the thinner Type II lure body to strengthen the lure design after a few Musky fishermen were said to have contacted Tony Burmek claiming his "first commercial made" original Type I Secret Bait plastic lure body somehow failed and allowed a hook to pull free of the lure body while fighting a trophy size Musky. The redesigned thinner body style was said to be made with a different type of hard plastic material to create a stronger body lure offered for musky fishing use as an improved Musky fishing lure that became widely known among lure collectors as Burmek's Type II style Secret Bait produced during the late 1950s. For whatever the historic reason, Burmek's Type II Secret Bait was not long lived as production of the thinner body style ceased, followed by three different "B" model Burmek lures introduced at various times during the 1960s. Burmek's 1960s modified body style muskie lures were called the B-1, B-2 and B-3 Burmek Musky Baits. Those later 1960s production "B" model muskie lures were apparently never fully appreciated by musky fishermen or lure collectors. For many years any collector finding a Burmek "B' Model lure believed Burmek's later made "B" style lures had more value if used as a musky fishing lure rather than added to a collection of Wisconsin made lures. Serious lure collectors continued to collect only the Type I or Type II early made Forked Tail style 1950s production BURMEK SECRET BAITS originally sold in attractive 2-pc cardboard Lure Boxes before Burmek switched over to making his 3 different but very similar style "B" Model musky lures during the 1960s, all packaged in blister display packs...... 21-Dec-11....
