This was purchased as an expander for my Tivo, I plugged it in and it's been working just fine, the little white light on the front is barely noticeable so it don't annoy you when it's on, the actual hard drive is a "smart" drive so it does not have to run at full speed when not in use so that saves a little on power consumption and keeps it cooler than a standard drive. I would certainly recommend this for using as a backup on your computer or to expand your recording space on a DVR, very reliable!

I hope this isn't a confusing review. The WD My Book AV 1TB may be a great product but it doesn't work with the TiVo Edge Over-The-Air (OTA) Antenna like TiVo technical support said it would. In fact the two USB 3.0 ports on the back of the TiVo Edge are non-functional. So this is more of a review of the TiVo Edge product rather than the WD My Book Drive. The TiVo Box (the two tuner model) is a piece of junk so don't buy this WD Drive for external storage because it will not work!! To be clear, this isn't a short coming of the drive but of the TiVo Box. Because of the cost and the reliability issues I'd advise against buying "anything" from TiVo. To add icing on this cake, TiVos business practices are questionable. THREE technical support reps told me this TiVo model would support external storage which it doesn't. I have 3 Western Digital My Book AV units (two 1T, one 500gb) connected to Charter Communication Motorola DVR units with 500Gb internal drives (apprx 75 hrs HD programming). ***The 1T unit adds about 150 hours of HD recorded programming. +-SETUP is VERY EASY and QUICK. ***Connection is via either an ESATA or USB (check your DVR). Once connected, follow on-screen prompts. The additional recording capacity is instantly recognized. The user is not aware of where the new recorded programming is located- on the DVR internal drive or on the WD external drive. I guess you could disconnect the external WD drive and then look at your DVR to see if the recorded programming is still present. I notice no difference in playback of the recorded programming. +-The Western Digital My Book AV can stand in either vertical or horizontal position. The included power adapter and cord are long enough to accommodate your configuration location. ***NOTE: recorded programming is only available when connected to the original DVR unit. Once connected to a specific DVR unit, the WD My Book is encoded to that DVR. If you connect to a different one, formatting is required and all recorded content is lost.Read full review
Now that I've added this extra memory I have plenty of room for all my saved shows. It plugged right in and self installed without a hitch. Great product at a great price. The vendor was easy to deal with and prompt in delivering it.

With network and cable companies scheduling so many programs at the same time on some evenings and with the pace of normal life activities, we can't watch everything at the same time and are forced to record some of these programs to watch at a later date. Sometimes we can't watch a show for a couple of weeks. There is only so much space on dvr's so the use of these dvr expanders is definitly the way to go. I currently have 2 dvr's and 2 dvr expanders and am able to save so many shows right now and am able to watch what I want, when I want, without having to worry about some programs being erased before I got a chance to watch. A sure-fire solution to my situation and I'm sure it would be for so many others. This product works perfectly, and it is virtually silent, so there is no distractions at all. I haven't compared this to any other product beacause I have not been able to find anything else that does what this does and there is no reason to shop around unless it was to find a better price.Read full review
