KEEP CHECKING OUR CLASSICLITERATI AUCTIONS!

This is an exceptionally attractive classic antique Masonic Sir Knight’s Templar Sword. It was made in circa the late 1890's to early 1899's by “The M. C. Lilley & Co”, one of the most quality consistent of all the historic American makers of Military and Fraternal Swords. “The M. C. Lilley & Co”, ranks high alongside the “Ames Sword Company”, “The Pettibone Bros” and “William Horstmann of Philadelphia”. The Sword is wonderfully mirror bright. One of the finest of its kind. The Sword is in really excellent vintage condition with only some normal minor wear (some common light surface scratches at the top of the backside of the scabbard). It is not easy finding Swords of this type in such an impressive state of preservation. So here is your chance. The Enamel radiates with colour. Here one finds a vibrant deep red with sparkling blue. Not only do the Enamel, Silver and nickel elements glow like magic, but so does the Grip. At the Black Grip (made of an early celluloid material) is a symbolic Silver Cross. Victorian era designs decorate the Sword. The Mounts include the ancient symbol of Cross Through Crown underneath a representation of Emperor Constantine’s great vision. The Middle Mount features the intertwined initials "KT" for Knights Templar. The Bottom Drag is an elaborate ancient Chivalric Crest or Coat of Arms. The Medieval Knights Head Pommel is a glistening Silver sculpture in miniature. The Blade has the original owner's name as well is that of the maker. This Sword in its Scabbard measures approximately 35½ inches. Alone the Sword is around 34 inches. The Blade is about 26¾ nches. Do not let this fine historic Sword escape! We regularly feature extremely attractive and also very rare, top quality antiques including among the finest in Fraternal and Masonic Swords and Historic Relics as well as many other fascinating items. Among our clients are Museums and Archives as well as many collectors the world over. Please keep checking our Classicliterati auctions. Please note that we try to describe items to the best of our ability. If you have any questions, please ask before bidding. FREE SHIPPING. Payment is expected within 5 days of auction close. SHIPPING ONLY TO THE UNITED STATES. Thank You.

WHO IS THE MYSTERIOUS MUSTACHIOED MAN ON THE SWORD GUARD?

The Cross-guard features a Classic Profile Portrait that has stumped connoisseurs of Masonic swords for many years. As most period records pertaining to the creation of these designs probably no longer in exist, one can only speculate, based on personal research. Although we can not be certain, to us, the most logical candidate is King Richard the "Lion Heart". It seems that the artist patterned his design after numerous artistically liberal interpretations of Richard who figured prominently in the Crusades and fought valiantly against the armies of Saladin (a scene routinely etched on Templar sword blades). His name has been commemorated by numerous Masonic Templar Commanderies and Priories. Please observe the picture (below) of the mysterious crowned man wearing a chainmail suit as he appears on the sword and compare it with the early posthumous portrait of King Richard placed beside it. To demonstrate the influence of that particular early King Richard rendering, we show two reproductions of old book cover illustrations which obviously also derived from this same image. A careful reading of the accompanying materials which include related historic illustrations of King Richard, Templar Badges, etc, should provide one with ample background for conducting further research into another very intriguing topic.

One finds King Richard the Lionheart's name and the same image in many Templar, Crusader and Chivalric oriented fraternal areas (ie: Knights of the Golden Eagle, etc. We own countless rare old fraternal sword & regalia catalogs and find this picture on their early swords too!), not least being the Templar Commanderies and Priories bearing the designation "Coeur de Lion", directly commemorating him (Note the photos we include below. These are not included with the sword). And of course, Richard's unquestionable significance to Templar history is evident in any number of scholarly works.

OURS IS A BUSINESS WHICH IS RUN BY MASONS. We have sold many fine items to Masonic museums and institutions as well as to private collectors around the world. We regularly correspond with scholars, archivists and historians around the world. The arts and artistry associated with Masonry has preoccupied us for many years and we love this field of history immensely. Having always been enthusiastically involved in the study and active documentation of Masonic Arts and Historical Artifacts, it gives us an extra special pleasure to also feature Masonic Collectibles among our various auctions. We relish securing good homes for these most wonderful and beautiful cultural treasures of Freemasonry, thus helping to some degree to insure their survival and appreciation for generations to come.
