Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will this tank fit my 2006 softail, Yamaha Raider, Ducati, Victory 8 Ball or in the space I now have a WCC Villain?
A: No, Yes and Maybe. Our tanks are made with "ground up" bikes in mind. The tanks are ready to go on anything but to convert your bike to be ready for a custom tank may take a lot of work. If your unsure about what is required the best idea is to stop by your local custom bike shop and let them know what you are thinking. They will be able to give you a good idea of the cost and time involved in converting your bike to be able to run a custom tank. If your bike is currently set up for a West Coast Choppers Villain tank then we can make you a bolt on tank but this about the only case where we can promise bolt on fit.
Q: What size tank should I get?
A: Our general rule of thumb is that a tank should be (or be cut to) 2 inches shorter than the length of your backbone distance from the neck to the wishbone which is why our tanks can fit on bike with backbones from 23 to 27 inches long.
Q: What type of tunnel will fit my backbone?
A: If you have a straight backbone then get a straight tunnel and it will fit. If you have a curved backbone you will need to do some thinking/measuring to make sure the tank is gonna be able to sit down on the frame the way you want it to. Our standard curved tanks follow a 25 inch radius curve(approximately 3-4 inches of total rise) in many cases this will closely match a curved frame and it may even work for bent drop seat or a double bend frame. If your frame has a distinctly different curve or you want us to mirror your frames bend(s) then you will need to send us a template from which to make the tunnel.
Q: What if I have an extra wide backbone?
A: Since our tanks assume 1.75 or smaller O.D. straight backbone if you have a frame with a larger backbone tube you will need to let us know when you order so that we can make a tunnel to accommodate.
Q: What is a "hollow tail" design?
A: The "hollow tail" refers to the last 4 inches of most of our tanks that do not contain any fuel. This area is added to the tank so that the buyer can cut the tank to fit their bike.
Q: Can I add dished in sides or a beveled design to this tank?
A: Yes. In general you are looking at an extra $100 and a week or so added time for this work.
Q: Can I add a side draft petcock or dual petcock bungs to this tank?
A: Yes. In general you are looking at an extra $50 and a week or so added time for this work.
Q: Can I get this tank with a curved or Frisco (very shallow tunnel) style tunnel?
A: Yes. In general you are looking at an extra $100 and a week or so added time (after we get the template) for this work.
Q: Can you make me a bigger version of this tank for an extra big bike?
A: Yes. In general you are looking at an extra $100 and a week or so added time for this work.
Q: What kind of gas caps can I use?
A: Our standard tanks come with a Harley Davidson style filler bung. This bung will accept all kinds of standard caps available at most V-Twin bike shops although we do NOT recommend you use the fake pop-up caps that fit in the Harley bungs. Why? Read on
Q: Can you put in a pop-up style cap/ why do you only offer Hot Match?
A: Yes. We stock the full line of Hot Match pop-up caps and can install them for just $200 which is less then the retail price ($240 to $290) of the cap alone. If you want to do a pop-up can then Hot match is the way to go. These are flat out the best pop-up caps on the market and don't rattle, sieze and leak like the others. They are superior in every facet: sealing, venting, smoothness of operation, fit, finish, and they always line up right when painted over. Plus it's the only true pop-up cap I know of that offers 2 alternative styles and an EPA compliant option for bikes that need to pass inspection. You get a good cap and you will be very happy with your tank for a lifetime.
Q: Can I send you my own cap/mounts/hardware to install?
A: Yes. If you want a cap or part installed that we don't carry you are welcome to order it separately and send it to us and we will install it for a $50 charge in your new tank.
Q: Does this tank include a retail box?
A: No, they are shipped in a plain white or brown shipping box.
Q: How long will it take you to get me my tank?
A: If you are buying a tank off our shelf then delivery can come as soon as 5 to 7 days but in most cases you should allow us 10 days to ready the tank and another 5 to 7 days for shipping.
Q: What tanks do you have in stock / how long does a custom order take?
A: We try to keep a stock our most popular styles in the 25 inch size with a straight backbone but even these styles are often sold out so please check with us first if you need for the tank to be there fast.
Q: I need a tank yesterday, can you guys do a rush order?
A: No. If you are on a real tight deadline and need a tank in hurry it is probably best to go to a local shop that has tanks in stock, We hate to refer business out but the only complaints we ever seem to get have to do with guys who didn't get tanks as fast as they were hoping.
Q: I live near you / I will be traveling in your area, can I pick up my tank in person?
A: No. We do not offer local pickup. This may soon be an option for Phoenix AZ residents but it is not at present.
Q: Do you ship outside of the United States?
A: Yes. We ship for free within the continental United States. Alaska and Hawaii are $50 for shipping. Australia, New Zealand, Japan, England and any country in the Euro zone is $100 for shipping. All other countries are $150 for shipping.
MY NEW TANK:
Q: I can see some nicks and scratches on the surface of my new tank, is this OK?
A: Yes. It is perfectly normal for a handmade tank to have "character marks" on the surface. These marks are part of the hand forging process and will be covered by the painters prep work before he shoots the first coat of base color.
Q: Do I need to pressure test a brand new tank?
A: Yes. We test every tank before it leaves our shop but the delivery process can be brutal and testing is always prudent with any new tank before you go to paint. First seal the tank off (duct tape will work fine) and raise the pressure to 2 to 5 PSI (via a bicycle or sports ball pump) and then hold the tank underwater and look for bubbles. This is an important step because a $1200 paint job is a terrible thing to waste.
Q: So if it has been double pressure tested then why should I bother to seal it?
A: The sealing question is hotly debated by old chopper heads but if you want our opinion: Every tank that cannot easily be replaced (this includes the paint job) should be sealed. We recommend epoxy sealers like POR15. Sealing not only to fixes leaking tanks it also:
1. Prevents the inside of the tank from forming rust that can get in your engine. Even if you keep gas in the tank the air pocket on top will still rust and that rust will drop or wash into the fuel, this is especially true in humid climates.
2. Adds strength and rigidity to your tank
3. Forms a tank inside a tank that will prevent future leaks
4. Seals off pinholes around the filler neck that lead to paint bubbling
Q: How do I use the included mounts?
A: The first step is to place a thin (about 1/8 inch) blanket of plastic, foam or cloth over the backbone to ensure you will have an air gap between tank and backbone. Then go ahead and play with different positions and angles for the tank to sit at until you have it positioned just how you want it. (remember to allow for your triple trees if they are not already on the bike) Then you simply mark where your tabs need to be (this may be even with, or well below the backbone tube) If your mount points fall below your backbone then drop the bracket position with a piece of tubing between it and the backbone. If your mounts are even with the backbone then you will need to cut the mounts into 2 tabs and weld each tab directly to the backbone. In most case you will have one of each.
Q: Why are there 2 extra holes in my tank?
A: These are crossover ports and allow you to hook up a line that will transfer fuel from one side of your tank to the other.
Q: I think you forgot to drill out my petcock bung?
A: Because it is hard to anticipate the best position for a petcock before the bike and tank are together we do not drill our petcocks out. If the location we installed works for you then drill away, if not let us know and we will send you a new petcock and you can grind that one off.
Q: I just paid, will you please leave me positive feedback?
A: We understand the importance of feedback and that it is an important part of eBay. We no longer leave feedback until feedback has been left for us. We have started doing this to insure our Buyers contact us PRIOR to leaving feedback if there is any issue with the item they received.
Q: I have a question that is not on this list...how can I contact you?
A: The shop phone is pretty hit & miss but you are welcome to try 925-270-4223 just be ready to leave a message. We can be also be reached by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
