What happens when you try to cram an entire series' worth of material into one movie? You get VOODOO MOON, which really should have been a television series. Twenty-five years ago, Cole & his sister Heather were kids, living in a peaceful rural town. Then the Devil inspired half the townspeople to massacre the other half. Since then, Cole has travelled the world, slaying demons and assembling a misfit group of friends who will risk their lives to help him in his final battle against the Devil in the town where it all began. The town is now underwater, with only the church steeple sticking out of the reservoir. Heather has the ability to sketch bad things, and her drawings come true --- but the tantalizing question is raised (and never answered): are her sketches visions of the future, or do her drawings CAUSE the bad things to happen? The Devil hints that He gave Cole his power (Why??? To create a worthy adversary?), and Cole can in fact do many of the same things as the Devil, such as levitate. There are also zombies in the cornfield and in the underwater town; some are controlled by Cole, and some by the Devil. Why, when the Devil kills Cole's friends, do most of them stay dead, but one comes back as a zombie and fights on Cole's side? The backstories of Cole's friends could each be a separate movie (or an episode of a TV series); but since they have to be crammed into one movie, they are reduced to flashbacks that either slow down the main action, or raise more questions and leave you wanting more. Some characters (Ray, Dutch, Mary-Ann, and a farmer who also survived the massacre) don't get a flashback, they simply explain how they know Cole, which doesn't seem quite fair. Also unfair (to the audience) is the fact that Cole and Heather don't get a flashback of their own. It would have been great to start the movie with the original massacre, then flash forward to the present day. As for the ending, it implies there are still ghosts (or zombies?) living in the underwater town. I like this movie, but with so much happening (and so much more that is only hinted at, like Heather's life in New Orleans, a statement that Heather is more powerful than Cole, apparent romantic attractions between characters, and a single glimpse of Cole's ghost/zombie mother under the lake), the movie feels rushed and chaotic at times. This story needs to be MUCH longer in order to give the characters the depth they deserve. VOODOO MOON could be the next WALKING DEAD if the right producer would adapt it for television.Read full review
