I bought the Sparkle Drive because I wanted a tube screamer type pedal and the clean boost/blend knob is a unique feature that I wanted to try. Hillsong guitarist Nigel Hendroff uses one and I dig his tone so I had to try this pedal. I play a G&L ASAT Deluxe through pedals to a VOX AC15C1 and I have tried a lot of overdrive (Fulldrive, OCD, TS9, TS9DX Keeley modded Flexi 4x2, Barber, etc.) I already had a few overdrives on my pedal board that I use individually and stacked (Cochrane Timmy, BOSS BD-2 with Keeley mod, Nobels OD-1). These are nice low gain overdrives that are very open sounding and not compressed (which is great) but I wanted to add a tube screamer type pedal for a little heavier overdrive that is more compressed and sustaining. The Sparkle Drive fits the bill nicely. It is the typical tube screamer tone but it is not noisy and does not mask the natural guitar tone as much as a DS9 to my ear. The clean boost/blend knob is unique and is useful by itself with drive low (on 1 or 2) for tone shaping. Simple to use and dial in usable tones.Read full review
I purchased this pedal as it's one of the best quality-for-price ts808 replicas. I wasn't exactly sure if I was going to use this as my main drive or to boost another drive pedal, but I had read a lot of awesome reviews and was on the board of a lot of players that have good tone (to me). Very quickly, my set up is a strat, les paul, or an ES-333 through my board into a modified fender excellsior with an eminence legend 15" speaker. I have the amp set super clean, so all my dirt comes from pedals. This typically isn't the ideal setup for tubescreamers. But I've been pleased with this pedal both as a main drive and as a booster. From here on, this review is going to be about how it sounds through my setup. If you're running a LP into a cranked marshall with 4x12 cab, you'll probably have different results. :) The drive on this pedal is very smooth. If you're looking for a crunchy drive pedal, this won't cut it. Even with the 'Clean' knob all the way off, there isn't much top-end grit. BUT, if you run this into a pedal that is a little crunchy, it saturates the rest of the signal and gives you a super-soaked, gainy sound. So I've got this pedal first in my drives. I use it alone when I want just a hair of grit in my tone, then kick on a second drive with a crunchy top-end for the thick tones! The mids on this pedal really fattens up the lead tones and helps you fill up the sound when you switch from chunky power cords to soaring leads.Read full review
This is an extremely versatile pedal. Use this pedal with an amp such as the Fender Princeton and you will get a very transparent blues sound, with a high gain tube amp such as the Marshall JCM900 the Sparkle Drive will push it over the top into METAL territory. The controls on this pedal are straight-forward, "Gain", "Tone" and "Volume" but with the addition of a "Clean" control. This pedal has a separate op amp for the clean channel, so its like having two amps!! Its the same concept Dean DeLeo used on Stone Temple Pilot's "Core" album...running one amp dirty for his main rhythm sound and blending in a separate clean amp to keep his tone punchy and defined. The Sparkle Drive makes an excellent clean boost pedal with the gain turned down. Its also a very quiet pedal compared to some other overdrives I've owned. The construction of this pedal is top-notch. It sports an all-metal enclosure and it has the input/output jacks placed on the TOP of the pedal...which is much appreciated when you need the room on your pedalboard!! The knobs turn smoothly and are very responsive. You do have to remove four screws to get to the battery compartment, but this is not an issue for me as I run all my pedals off a Voodoo 2 Pedal Power. When you consider the low price point, made in U.S.A., full bypass, top grade electronics, built like a tank, 5 year warranty and excellent customer support from Voodoo Labs...this pedal is an obvious choice!!Read full review
I purchased this pedal as an option for clients in my studio who like the “feel” of a pedal and for reamping to blend tones. I use all low wattage amps in the studio and sometimes the right pedal will give you that blend you are looking for. I like to get most of the sound from the amp in the studio and cautious about what effects I will use. The “sparkle” I found is one of the pedals that works well in the studio because it has a clean solid sound and the overdrive sounds musical/organic and “not cheap.” I call it versatile because you can boost the clean signal separately from the overdrive channel. Boosting the clean channel for some of the low wattage amps is really helpful. You can blend a clean signal into the overdriven signal or add some overdrive into your clean signal to give it some “grit” giving it just a hint of dirt to make your point if needed. I find adding the some clean signal into an overdriven signal really brings out the note separation and the clarity of the tone. In the studio you can take your time to adjust these sounds and the “sparkle” gives you a lot of variability and variety to get what you want. The Keeley modification apparently gives you more overdrive signal availability and a “cleaner” sound. They change out the light to a blue light, put in a diode for a more natural sound and increase the bass response so there is not so much bass loss when the pedal is engaged. They probably do more and I have not compared mine to a stock “sparkle.” I do know that the pedal I have is a great option and is professional piece of equipment that will add that certain “sparkle” to the right song.Read full review
I would rate this product higher if I did'nt experience a subtle "hiss" sound through my amp when I plug the pedal in. That subtle sound is typical of many pedals though. The tones I get from the pedal are amazing and creamy. The echo effect is my favorite feature. You can have your notes bounce back however you choose with the three knobs that control: Echo Time, Repeats, and Effect Level. The chorus has a beautiful sound quality that can make your chords melt. I would recommend this pedal because it can deliver amazing sounds that will enhance your guitar expressions.
