This is a wonderful and very unique vintage sterling silver souvenir spoon in the shape of a shovel.
This beautiful spoon has elaborate decorations on the front and the back is smooth except for a few very tiny embossed decorations on the back that imitate the rivets that would have held the shovel together.
The bowl has the phrase "Make The Dirt Fly" embossed on it and the stem/handle has an intricate and deeply tooled decoration that is the word "Panama."
I believe that this particular spoon commemorates the famous biographical book by Rose van Hardeveld. She wrote about her life in Panama during the buidling of the Panama Canal from 1906 to 1912. The title of her book is "Make The Dirt Fly."
The spoon was made to replicate a shovel with the bowl of the spoon being the shovel spade and at the top is a pierced handle that imitates the handle of a shovel. The spoon is marked "Sterling" on the back.
This is a fabulous sterling silver souvenir spoon and would make a great addition to any spoon or souvenir collection.
