This purse was consigned to me by a friend whose aunt was born in 1900 and passed away in 1986. She found it among her possessions when cleaning out her home. We're guessing that it was purchased in the 20's or 30's. Neither one of us are experts in vintage handbags, so don't know any more history.
It was in a box marked "Arnold Constable & Co., New York", so we assume that's where she purchased it. This makes sense since she was the head nurse of Bellevue Hospital in NYC when she was younger. In researching the company, I found that it was a department store chain in the New York City metropolitan area. It operated over 150 from its founding in 1825 to its closing in 1975 and served the rich and elite of the city, such as Grover Cleveland, Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, J.P. Morgan, John D. Rockefeller and Cornelius Vanderbilt.
The box is very worn, in bad shape, has come apart, and one side is completely torn off (I still have it), but it is the original box. As you can see in the photo, the purse can be stored in it. The inside has the look and feel of satin.
Details of the purse:
- Gray mesh with rhinstones one front and back
- I don't see that any rhinstones are missing; however, some have become dark with age
- Flat closure
- Vintage style snap closure with one side of the snap missing.
- Inside is in good shape - no rips or tears
- One open inside pocket
- Drop is 5.5"
- Height is 5.5"
- Width is 5.5"
