Brand:

Martin

Key: Bb
Model:

Handcraft Imperial

Skill Level: Professional
Trombone Type: Tenor Country of Manufacture: United States
This is a Martin "Handcraft Imperial" trombone. It is a 1937 vintage, and despite the age it has a lot of life left in it!

I am a professional trombone player and instructor at a collegiate level, and I have hoarded a few of this particular model over the years (Martin Handcraft Imperial, and yes, "Handcraft" part is VERY important - will explain later) because it is just fantastic instrument. I have kept all of them ready to go at any time, having them thoroughly gone over by a competent tech when I purchased them, and keeping them in top shape since. With current economic downturn, I am being forced to let all but one go - and this one is the last one to sell (meaning I will only have one after this sells).

Specifications are quite interesting. It has a 7" yellow brass bell, and .485"/.500" dual bore slide with nickel silver outer slide (with brass crook). From what I understand, Handcraft Imperials came in two sizes (bore sizes - they seem to have shared a same bell). This is a No. 1A model which seems to be rarer than the more common No. 2A model with .500"/.525" bore.

"Handcraft Imperial" was Martin's top of the line model, before they released Committee model (and remained so for a while after the release of Committee model, too). Due to a marketing decision, Martin had later decided to remove the word "Handcraft" from the Imperial model trombones and demote them into an intermediate model - with completely different specs. (I think they were .485 straight bore slide with brass outers and a 7.5" bell??) They are completely different instruments.

Of the two Handcraft Imperials I have now, this one is more versatile. Why am I selling the more versatile one?? Well, I play a few different instruments and I am looking for my handcraft Imperial to do specific things. If I were to choose just one to take to a deserted island, I would definitely choose this one, actually. It is a wonderful instrument. Plays big, and the sound projects! You can play raw, or sweet. Allows a lot of volume as well. You might say it is kind of in between King 2B and 3B - in a different way than 2B+.

Has a "Lifton" case that says "Built like a fortress." Not sure if this was the original case. Definitely period-correct, and fits perfectly - but no Martin badge. Lifton may have been providing Martin the cases, or maybe an aftermarket case maker?? The case works fine - all latches work. Has no fastener on the slide compartment lid - no evidence there ever was one.

The instrument is completely unlacquered. Hand slide is surprisingly good. There is no wear on the inner tubes. Tuning slide moves freely, too. Guaranteed to play right out of the box (i.e. no repair necessary). Mouthpiece is not included, even though the first picture has one (sorry).

Thank you for looking!
