The Original H. L. Leonard #38-1/2, Three-piece, 7.5 foot, 3.4 ounce, Tonkin Cane Split Bamboo Fly Rod. For a 4 or 5 weight fly line. Made between 1963-64, pre-fire at Central Valley, New York, with all the famous Leonard parts and workmanship. The engraved reel seat reads: The Leonard Rod-H.L.Leonard Rod Maker, Reg U.S. Patent Off. It comes with an additional tip section, original cloth bag and aluminum case with brass caps. Purchased in 1965, lightly used and not used since 1969.

Both of the tip sections is one inch shorter from the tip end. I had repaired a broken tip top and because it casted better, I had the other tip section shorten to match. The rest of the rod has been lightly restored recently with cleaning and minor touch-up. The rod is in very good plus condition with all windings, line guides, hook keeper, ferrules and fittings totally intact. The beautiful original vanish has a few very minor and superficial marks. Brilliant red silk wraps with lime green tipped at hookkeeper and ferrules. Perfect cork on grip. Nickel silver parts still shine.

The Leonard 38-1/2 was designed as a wet fly and nymph rod with a parabolic medium action. The shorten tip sections actually improve that action since it works the rod lower with a stronger tip.  Some of us who fish a lot of dry flies hated to admit that most of the trout are caught under the surface. This would be the rod to catch more fish with. A rare, hard-to-find Leonard. An exceptional collectible and investment.
