In the
Voodoo mythology he is the hungry figure in black top hat, long black tail coat,
and dark glasses posted at the eternal crossroads, where pass the souls of the
dead on their way to Guinee, the legendary place of origin and the abode of the
gods. Ghede is wise beyond all others, since as god of death he holds the
knowledge of all those who have lived. He is also ‘the lord of life’, a phallic
deity, he sustains the living, brings fertility and fecundity, and resurrects
the dead. In the chamber dedicated to his worship a sculptured phallus lies side
by side with the grave-digger's tools.
As the
guardian of the dead, the cross of Baron Samedi, as Ghede is sometimes called,
is in every cemetery. As the lord of love, Ghede is noted for his unpredictable
obscenity, lewdness, and his inordinate desire for strong drink. He is liable to
arrive at a ceremony for another Loa and outrageously disrupt the proceedings.
His possession of devotees cannot be controlled by the Hougans, the ‘spirit
masters’.
Ghede is the god of the dead in Voodoo, but it is also the
name of the group of deities who belong to his retinue. He is a very wise man
for his knowledge is an accumulation of the knowledge of all the deceased. He stands on the
center of all the roads that lead to Guinee, the afterworld.
His followers
disguise themselves as corpses and they dance the Banda. Other members of his
retinue are Baron la Croix and Baron Cemetière. His feminine counterpart is
Maman Brigitte.
He is a wise counselor and a shameless trickster. He is
especially loving toward children, and is called the patron of children
throughout the Vodoun world. He is known as a healer who can grant life by not
giving death. Even though Ghede represents death, he celebrates life!
Devotions
to Gede are carried out on Fridays and/or Mondays, and during the entire month
of November. November 2, All Soul's Day, commonly called Fet Gede (pronounced
GAY-day), is a national holiday in Haiti. Catholics attend mass in the morning
and then go to the cemetery, where they pray at family grave sites and make
repairs to family tombs.
The Gede family of spirits are the guardians of the dead and masters
of libido. They embrace the dual domains of human frailty and mortality, the
creation and the conclusion of life.
Baron Samedi is one of the Guédés, related
to and intertwined with Baron Cimitère and Baron La Croix. He is an Guédé of the
Americas, bridging the Guédés and Legba. Both are guardians of the crossroads,
the place where spirits cross over into our world. If the intercessions desired
are with the Loa, then Legba is saluted and asked to allow the Loa to
participate. If the intercessions are with the dead, then Guédé is the
intercessor.
