Excellent flash at an excellent price. It is more sophisticated and offers much more flexibility than the pop up flash on my Canon EOS camera. I used one of these flash units with my Canon AE-1 with great results, but it eventually failed. The battery life on the this flash is very good when using one of the auto modes and rechargeable batteries (NiMH or NiCad). This flash outperforms the pop up flash in all environments except close-up portrait or "snapshot" photography. It is often too hot for these types of photos, even in auto mode. I look forward to years of excellent service from this flash.
I use the Vivitar 2500 as my go to flash almost every day. It uses 2AA rechargeable batteries and the recharge time is fast. It has four manual output levels and has a range of about 30 feet at high output. It's only manual, no e-ttl, but thats Ok, I take a test shot and adjust the level. I use it on my Canon 5D Full Frame camera on the hot shoe, pc port or radio trigger, It has a trigger voltage of 11.5v and is safe to use on digital Canon Cameras, with the exception of the 10D series and maybe the 1D series which are limited to 6v. It's light wight and has a flip lock shoe holder. It also has lens zoom ability to project the light further and also has diffraction. I paid $10 + shipping and it's a best bang for the buck flash.
Excellent small auto thyrister flash which has low trigger voltage (about 12 volts) making it suitable for most digital cameras with a hot shoe.

The Vivitar 2500 is a great little flash. It's under-rated for it's size, price and durability. Easy to use if you follow the manual.
