VINTAGE/RARE EARLY 1900's HILLERICH & BRADSBY CO. OFFICIAL INDOOR BASEBALL BAT - BAT MODEL IS "NO. 54" -

The game of indoor baseball - a sport unfamiliar to most contemporary baseball fans and collectors because its demise occurred almost beyond living memory, but it was once an immensely popular game, with publications and fan devotion on near-par with major league baseball. Invented by Chicagoan George Hancock in 1887, it was baseball played on a gymnasium floor during the shut-in winter months of the late-19th century, with basic equipment consisting of a mushy soft 17-inch ball and stick-like bat, no gloves, and bases 27 feet apart. The game spread like wildfire across the nation, and by the winter of 1891–92, there were thousands of teams organized in flourishing amateur leagues, with regional and national champions. Around 1907, players began taking the game outdoors, calling it "playground ball" and later, "softball." The indoor version went into steep decline in the 1910s, pushed out of the gyms by basketball and the end of the dead-ball era, officially sentenced to death by the popularity of long-ball hitters such as Ruth. Investors staged comebacks right up into the 1930s with attempts to establish major leagues and franchises rostering stars like Tris Speaker and Jimmie Foxx. The sport's early popularity warranted dedicated product lines from baseball's most venerated suppliers as evidenced by thIS antique issued by Hillerich & Bradsby. Bat is tapered with thin handle and thin barrel measuring about 33" inches long with nice wood and grain color and beautiful patina. Features deep and bold wood burned Hillerich & Bradsby logo in center of bat and states model "No. 54." It also states "Official Indoor" on barrel of bat.

BAT IS IN EXCELLENT USED CONDITION WITH "NO" CHIPS OR REPAIRS. HOWEVER, THERE'S A MINOR, HARDLY NOTICEABLE, APPROX. 1/2 INCH CRACK ON KNOB THAT DOESN'T TAKE AWAY FROM THE DISPLAYING OF BAT - BAT WOULD BE A GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR BASEBALL COLLECTION AND WOULD SIMPLY LOOK OUTSTANDING DISPLAYED IN YOUR SPORTS ROOM - THESE SCANS HAVE NOT BEEN TOUCHED UP IN ANY WAY AND WHAT YOU SEE IS THE ONE YOU GET (Please review scanned photos to look for yourself and email any questions and I’ll be glad to answer them) – I ACCEPT PAYMENT BYPAYPAL. FOR OTHER WAYS PLEASE CONTACT ME) - BUYER TO PAY $12.95 FOR SHIPPING AND HANDLING (Includes Delivery Confirmation and Insurance) - ALL SALES ARE FINAL #10210
