This book comes alive with a wide array of characters and for once the main character (Lucas Davenport) isn't the typical boring cop who works too many hours and drinks too much coffee. He has a second life as a software developer and this adds a surprising amount of depth to the story. There are actually two crimes that are being solved in this one too, a sex scandal and a murder. This aspect of the book also makes it one that you can stay involved in and not feel like you're reading something you've read once before. It's a non-typical plot composed very well with lots of ups and downs. Overall, I give this one a 9 out of 10. It fits the category of murder/suspense but it breaks a lot of barriers too. In my opinion this may be Sandford's best effort yet. It's a little less graphic and violent than most others in the Prey series but the vast array of characters and plot twists take any attention away from a less gruesome read and command you to keep turning pages.Read full review
I have not personally read this book but my Uncle collects this author's writings. I think he has read several of Stanford's books in this series. I bought the book for him because he was in the hospital waiting to find out if he had a tick-bite related disease or if he had Leukemia. I knew this was the most recent book written by John Stanford so I went straight to Ebay to search for it. Well of course I found it the first time I searched & had a good book for him to read by the end of the week thanks to Ebay.
I love the Prey series of books by John Sandford. They are a page turner.

In the interests of full disclosure, I set this book aside about 150 pages due to its gratuitous and salacious sex and excessive profanity. (Do real people actually behave and talk like this?) Given that the characters are well drawn and the plot is unusual and interesting, I couldn't help but think that in the hands of a more skillful writer this book could have been an exceptional murder mystery. The plot lacks tautness, and it is diluted with irrelevant (and uninteresting) sub plots which seem to have no purpose other than to titillate.
