Figures & Portraits

Offered to the highest bidder, an unusual and charming antique English miniature portrait of a Mrs. Merewether, c. 1810-1820.

This portrait is unusual in its rendering, executed in pastel -- or gouache? -- on toned paper, rather than the more straightforward watercolor on a white ground.. Very subtle effects are created in the subject's elaborately ruched and beribboned bonnet, her high ruffed gauzy bodice, the gathered pale blue material of her dress, and her elaborately patterned shawl in the contrast of this judiciously applied highlighing against the darker tone of the paper. Mrs. Merewether's rather kindly, motherly facial features are rendered with great delicacy, and the artist's attention to detail extends to the exquisitely rendered little red book his subject holds in her left hand (a characteristic accessory, no doubt). It's honestly hard to capture the detail and refinement of this work in photographs. Overall it's a very compelling portrait, which can be dated by Mrs Merewether's costume, and that of her husband's contemporary pendant portrait, to the second decade of the 19th c.

The portrait is housed in its period black laquered papier mache frame with its brass rabet, convex glass, and decorative brass hanging ring detailed with the rose symbolizing England. The portrait itself measures 3 1/2" high by 3" wide, in its frame it measures 6" high by 5 1/8" wide.

I am currently offering the pendant to this, the similarly rendered portrait of Mr. Merewether (see last photo, and my other listings). Together they make a charming pair, and of course their value is greater together. As I'd hate to see them separated, I will offer free shipping to any buyer, domestic or international, of both pieces.

Condition: Excellent. No faults to the portrait or its period frame, save slight surface wear/toning to the brass rabet..
