Union Pacific 27 Big Blow Turbine Alco Brass HO custom painted (Alco D-150).  There is no original box for this model.  A well crafted Japanese KMT imported can motor powered model of this very large turbine engine.  A gas turbine-electric locomotive (GTEL) uses a gas turbine to drive an electric generator (DC) or alternator (AC). The electric current thus produced is used to power traction motors. Thus a GTEL is very similar to a diesel-electric so that the turbines built by GE used many of the same parts as their diesels. This type of locomotive was first experimented with in 1920 but reached its peak in the 1950s to 1960s.  From 1958-1961, General Electric delivered 30 8500 HP Units to the Union Pacific and assigned to the roster as 1 through 30.  Dubbed "Big Blows" on account of their high noise level, these larger than earlier generations turbine consists produced 8500 horsepower (6.3 MW) with its two permanently coupled six-axle units – hence a C-C+C-C wheel arrangement. The first unit contained the cab, auxiliary diesel engine, and other control equipment with the second unit having the turbine and electric generators. The third unit was a fuel bunker.   Although some may differ, according to Cockle’s Giants of the West, UP engineering records do confirm for us that the 8500 HP was increased to 10,000 HP during 1964. The overall length was 179 feet and tipping the scales at 816,000 lbs,  they could cruise at 76 MPH with a continuous tractive effort of over 145,000 lbs.    Despite their incredible horsepower, they were not fuel efficient.  The oil crisis rise in fuel costs in the 1970s as well as new cracking processes that allowed the production of lighter grade fuels and plastic industry use of C bunker grade oil and doomed the turbines. Moreover, their extreme noise levels and 850 degree Fahrenheit exhaust gasses banned them from metropolitan areas.  All were out of service by 1970. Their running gear was recycled into the GE U50C locomotives.  Two of the turbines survive - UP 26 in Ogden, Utah, and UP 18 at the Illinois Railway Museum. Several of the tenders were retained and converted to hold water for use with Union Pacific's operating steam locomotives, UP 844 and UP 3985.  This is a very large model and is only intended to be run very large radii – the model does run well on the test track with the usual minor noise from the older tower drives.  The model features Can motors in two units and the paint is very good with added details like the GE logo.  The wheels show some plating wear.  The model comes without  original box Please allow $12 for domestic insured domestic shipping and handling.  Foreign Bidders please email for a shipping quote.   {6138}
