I just started reading this book and I am about four chapters into it. The book has been great so far and the author has pinpointed every relationship within the Army regarding the places and jobs of military wives to the relationships between our troops and their dedication to their service. It definitely sheds light on some of the issues that are "swept under the rug" so to speak. As the book says, you are not handed a manual when you marry someone in the Army that explains how to act, carry yourself, address others, and your overall behavior. It is something you learn as you go, if you so choose. The book is a great read for anyone who is married to someone in the Army as well as any family member that might not quite understand what a military wife goes through on a day to day basis. The "outsiders" (civilians), as they are called, do not always understand the mindset or behaviors of a military spouse. This helps those that are unfamiliar with the lifestyle of military spouses better understand why we do or say certain things. Being a military spouse is often a hard, often times thankless, but very rewarding job. I did not grow up with anyone who was in the military so becoming a spouse with NO military knowledge whatsoever was a definite eye-opener for me but I can definitely relate to this book and the people in it. Sadly, the events that took place in Fayetteville, which was the author's reason for writing this book, were very tragic and my prayers go out to the friends and families that were affected.Read full review
Anyone who served in the Army, or ,for that matter, any military service will identify with the lives portrayed in the book. Senior officers and junior enlisted soldiers and their wives are presented with all the courage and trials that go with their husband's service. It will ring true with veterans and fascinate those that never served. I would have liked to have seen it expanded somewhat to include the family in which the service person was the wife, but that can be for the next volume.
