This volume (which covers the "old" battleships) is a super-handy reference for model builders, along with Part 2 (which covers the "fast" battleships.) This book packs in a lot of handy features, including line drawings that show how these ships changed in appearance over time, a plate of color silhouettes to show the various paint schemes (I wish there were more of those), beautiful drawings of individual fittings such as guns and radars that are hugely valuable to the high-detail model builder, and an abundance of photographs - both of overall ship views as well as selected close-ups. The title "In Action" is appropriate, too, since most of the photos show the ships firing guns or at least underway with appropriate wakes - again, another useful reference for the model builder looking to make realistic dioramas with water effects. The book is divided by ship class, covering the Wyoming, New York, Nevada, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Tennnessee and Colorado classes. For each class, the photos tend to go back to pre-war or Pearl Harbor, and there are some rare photos of the ships as they appeared after salvage at Pearl or after interim repairs were made to take the ships to appropriate yards for more extensive refits. All in all, an excellent volume to have as a reference - and usually available at a price that makes this resource a great value for the dollar.Read full review
