Euphorbia tirucalli 'Sticks on Fire' (Red Pencil Tree) - This very striking succulent shrub is a form of Euphorbia tirucalli, a plant that eventually can grow to 25 feet tall by 8 to 10 feet wide. 'Sticks on Fire' lacks the chlorophyll of the parent plant and, as such, is much slower growing and probably will never obtain the same size. We guess a reasonable size for 'Sticks on Fire' to reach is 4-8 feet but with time perhaps taller. The many branches on this interesting tree are as thin as pencils and a reddish-golden color. The color tends to fade closer to yellow in the summer, and becomes redder in the winter. The small leaves are inconspicuous and soon drop. It is drought tolerant but cold hardy only to about 30 degrees F. Be careful when handling, the milky juice can burn the skin.

Cultural information: "Pencil Cactus" are a bizarre looking plant who's sap is poisonous. "Pencil Cactus" are quite easy to grow if placed in direct sunshine or very bright indirect light. Water sparingly maybe twice a month... allowing most of the soil mass to dry out. Feed monthly, spring through fall. When your plant becomes to tall, cut it back to the desired height. Wear gloves and a long sleeve shirt when pruning "Pencil Cactus". The sap may cause skin irritation. Be careful not to get the sap in your eyes.
Chartreuse to yellow new growth matures to a fiery orange, then red on this great selection of the popular Pencil Cactus. Needs high-light to direct sun for the best color. An excellent choice to add contrasting form, and texture to the tropical garden or mixed containers.
