Up for bid is a Trio/Kenwood MA-5100 Electronic Crossover and Multi Channel IDS Amplifier. These are EXTREMELY RARE in the U.S. as they were never actually available for sale here.  I need to "downsize" (we are moving) and have decided to let this unit go.  I acquired this from Japan a few years ago as part of my extensive collection of Kenwood X000 series components.  Trio Electronics is the actual manufacturer of the Kenwood line of components.  The Japanese domestic versions were labeled "Trio" and the export versions were labeled "Kenwood".  As you can see, this unit is labeled "Trio".  Trio had an extensive line of "multi amp" products during this period.  If you are familiar with the "Supreme Series" of components (700T, 700C and 700M), the original "Supreme One" was an integrated amplifier with an electronic crossover and six separate amplifiers on the same chassis with the preamp.  The never bothered to export many of this "I/D/S" series for whatever reason, so they are very hard to come by.

A quick word about multi-amplification.  The MA-5100 was designed to be inserted in the "preamp out/Main in" loop on the rear of all their integrated amps of the period (KA-6000 thru KA-7002 and everything in between).  It can be used with any "normal" preamp / power amp combination from just about any manufacturer.  It actually includes four channels of amplification so you can power all the speaker drivers with it's own amplifier (six channels of amplification in total), bypassing the "passive crossovers" normally used in full range speaker systems.  Passive crossovers have lots of issues. They have to deal with the filtering of high level power outputs plus all the other problems inherent in their design.  By keeping the crossover at more or less "Line Level" you get the benefit of low distortion, phase accurate, active circuitry.  There is plenty to read online and I certainly can't get into a lengthy discussion here.  I will make a couple of observations though.  I have been a big fan of multi-amping most of my life.  The main reason I am such a fan, and this is purely subjective, is the amazing stereo imaging that seems to be somehow related to this process.  I love being able to listen to music with out being aware of where the speakers are located (or even the walls).  I will say that tremendous progress has been made in passive crossover design over the years, somewhat negating the huge advantage that multi-amping has had in the past... BUT... those advances mostly show up in VERY expensive speaker systems, rarely trickling down to the smaller and more reasonably priced units.  Also... Using an electronic crossover allows a lot of experimentation and research in to your own personal tastes and preferences.  The low end is where you need the most power, so the less powerful amps provided in the MA-5100 for the midrange and highs are more than adequate.  You can also play around with speaker drivers pretty easily too.  Planer drivers work especially well without any passive crossovers in the circuit.  The same seems to be true for ribbons and air motion transformers as well.

This unit is in very good physical condition.  It may need a little DeOxit here and there as it has been out of use for a while now, but otherwise, it should be working just fine. This unit, even though it is a Japanese Domestic Unit, does have some limited voltage selection.  It has been set set to 117 volts which is fine for American use.  The asking price represents the "lowest" amount I will accept to part with this unit.  It cost me considerably more to buy and ship from Asia.  Other than that, there is no reserve.

As is usually the case with vintage electronics, it is being sold "as is" with no warranty, expressed or implied, of any kind.  No returns will be accepted for any reason, please bid accordingly.

If you have questions, please send them along and I will do my best to answer them before you bid.

Good Luck and Happy Bidding!
