The Lord of the Rings
I have for sale this very early 2,1,1, set of the Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers & Return of King. All are UK editions and all come with original jackets. All books have been together since purchased new by the same first owner.
This set will be as close as you will get to a 1,1,1 set without paying £5,000+.
I have taken lots more photos if needed so please ask and I will send.
So to the finer details:
Fellowship of the Ring:
First Edition/Second impression published by George Allen & Unwin in December 1954 and limited to 2,500 copies, less than the first impression. Original red unmarked boards, slightly rolled edges and gold embossed print still visible. Neat name and date (1954) on front blank page.
The pages within are clean and inscription free with only mild foxing on blank and end page. Original map is very bright and I suspect hardly opened. The title page has the ‘1954’date, the map has the red dot near to ‘Umbar’ and all other first impression points noted.
Dust jacket is unclipped showing 21s net and states Second Impression. Chips to corners and top of sunned spine and lower spine portion missing.
The Two Towers:
First edition/first impression published by George Allen & Unwin in 1954 and limited to 3250 copies. Original red boards which are clean and unmarked, spine top and bottom slightly rolled and gold embossed print still visible. As expected fractional wear on corners but nothing to detract from book.
The pages within are generally clean with a neat name and date (Dec 1954) inscription on front blank page. Foxing on front and rear blank pages and a couple of pages at rear. Original map as new - very bright and I suspect hardly opened.
Dust jacket is original first impression and is unclipped still showing 21s net. Slightly chipped to top and bottom of spine and corners and showing usual sun fading on spine. Closed tear (10mm) on spine. Odd other mark but in line with book age and shelf wear.
The Return of the King:
First edition/first impression published by George Allen & Unwin in October 1955 and limited to 7000. Original red boards which are clean and unmarked, spine top and bottom slightly rolled and gold embossed print still visible.
The pages within are generally clean with a neat name on front blank page. Foxing on front and rear blank pages and a fraction on last page. Original map as new - very bright and I suspect hardly opened. Page 49 has the ‘Leogolas’ text slip and ‘4’ at the bottom.
Dust jacket is original first impression and is unclipped still showing 21s net. Slight chipping to top and bottom of spine and showing usual sun fading on spine. Closed tear (10mm) on spine. Odd other mark but in line with book age and shelf wear.
Apologises for any shadow/reflections from protective wrappers on photos. These are not on books themselves.
So overall a lovely classic set of this famous story and with two true first impression volumes they will take pride of place in any Tolkien or classic book collection.
Note: Please can I ask the winning bidder to arrange payment within three days of the sale completion. Due to the value of this book I will only send it special delivery & well wrapped which will provide £500 insurance. This will cost £15 to UK, £25 to Europe and £32 elsewhere and NOT as stated above. Should p&p be less than above I will of course refund.
Drop me an email any questions.
