I've used this unit a little and am mostly satisfied w/it. That it records it's own ideas of what I'd like isn't a favorite feature at this point as I haven't used it enough for it to 'learn' what I like. Hence it's choices are way off base, tho I expect that will change w/use. It's also tricky to figure out how to get it to record exactly what I want to the 'wish list'. I tried to program it to record our local NFL team's games, but it only 'caught' the 1st after programing and missed the 2nd. I need to revise my key words and try again. But my biggest complaint/dislkie is the daily calls for programing updates: they are averaging quite a bit longer than the 2 mins the book quoted, which is a major issue as it's a long distance call. And being the calls are so long, it's using up half or more of our long distance minutes each month. So I've disconnected the phone line as the book suggested and now need to deal with the fuss to reconnect and manually make the updating call...not a fave! Still, the unit is doing/will do what I bought it for, so I don't regret it's purchase vs the continued expense of renting a DVR from my cable provider.Read full review
After viewing TV at my parents house, who have Directv with a DVR, I decided to look into Tivo. I was disappointed when I started learning about the Tivo and it's limitations compared with my parents Directv DVR. 1. The first drawback is that you have to watch the program you are recording. With my parents DVR they can watch one program while they are recording on another channel. The Tivo only has one tuner and it limits the programs you can record. There is no recording in the same time-slot. I was thinking about getting a splitter and plugging into another port in my TV but lets face it the TV should address this. 2. Slow processor speeds. The Tivo has a long pause whenever you have it recording a program. It has at least a 20 second delay when you tell it to record something. Overall I'm pleased and maybe I'll look into a later model. Next time I will read the specifications closer.Read full review
I bought a TiVo after a friend showed me his. This is the best thing ever! I have also tried the DVRs that come with certain cable services, but NOTHING beats a TiVo!! I love the little Tivo guy, it gives you a friendly feel and makes you wanna learn how to use it. Setting it up is a piece of cake! It even "learns" your taste, and suggests shows that it thinks you'll like! The more you use it, the better it is a choosing shows for you! You can also interact online! Set up, programming, and using the TiVo is very easy, and has lots of guides just in case you need some help. You hardly need to read any manuals, because it comes with a recording of how to use it already on the TiVo! Once it's connected, a lady tells you all about TiVo and what you can do with it! Subscription for service is very reasonable! It has plenty of memory. You can record so many programs! It's great! I love the instant replay button! It's great for if you missed a punchline, or a clue to a good mystery. I also like the fact that I can be 20 mins into watching a show, and if I really like it , I can still record the whole program. For example, I could be watching a 30min sit-com that came on at 7:00pm. I wind up liking the show and want to record it for my friends to watch when they visit next week. The current time is 7:20pm. But that's OK, because the TiVo will record from 7:00pm to the end of the show! That's right! I also like that if the phone rings, I can pause the TiVo, so I don't miss anything! It is great! I already have two, and plan to get one in each room of the house. I may even splurge for one of the series 3 TiVos. I love, love LOVE TiVo!!!!!!!!xoxoxoRead full review
After hearing lots about TiVo systems and service, I finally made the decision to buy a Series 2 standard definition DVR box for my home. I think the machine and technology that accompanies it are amazing. One of my best purchases on eBay actually. I even got a great deal, buying the TiVo for only $55 using eBay's "Best Offer" feature. My only problem was the TiVo service subscription fee, but in the grand scheme of what the machine can do, I didn't mind paying up front. I highly recommend buying a TiVo, and try to find a good deal on eBay.
I bought the tivo DVR two weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this inexpensive dvr. The Tivo Series2 size is perfect for any tv. My only complaint is that the menu system on the tivo makes you click four times before you can find any program in the menu or perform a additional functions. Overall, I'd recommend the tivo series 2 if you're on a budget.
