This is definitely one of my more favorite games from Square-Enix of the year 2014. If you're a fan of rhythm games or even just Final Fantasy or things made my Square-Enix in general, you are in the right place. For those of you that have played its predecessor or even games like Rhythm Thief, Rhythm Heaven, or Rhythm Heaven Fever will definitely enjoy this one just as much as the last. Unlike the previous one, you don't get to start off with main characters from all of the Final Fantasy series, instead you get some of them along with other characters, but don't fret! Just like in its previous installment you can unlock them by means of the crystal fragments and even more characters not only through the different color crystals, but there are usually about four characters to unlock with the exception of a few from others. There are also characters you can get via DLC only such as Vincent Valentine and a different outfit of Tifa's and others! Another thing to take note of, is the number of songs is a staggering amount compared to the previous game as well as through DLC they have added other songs from other games in the Square-Enix franchise such as Chrono Trigger and even The World Ends With You (being a more recent addition in the past month) along with many others. Last but not least, is the game mechanics itself. For those familiar with its gameplay through stylus, do not worry. You can use your circle pad and the a,b,x,y,L, or R buttons to hit move in time with the rhythm if stylus is too much or difficult, so it gives variety in how you can approach the game in your own unique way. Even using a combination of stylus and a particular button if that is your choosing. Now, they have changed things up a bit from the other game from the dark crystal games you would go through to the medley quests to unlock different crystals and even playing songs with a different twist than how originally played in music mode. Another mode they have added is going against the AI for medals, which can be tricky due to the random things that can make playing a song more difficult from increasing its speed to changing its pace or even the directions you swipe itself! Making it all the more challenging, yet I do feel they tightened things up on the controls a tad, making it harder to get criticals or even greats. Take that as you will which could be seen as more challenging or just more of a hassle. Either way, this game is a definite buy for those interested and then some, if not this collector for the many amounts of music, the Theatrhythm stylized 3DS case, or the cards that well made and just the Final Fantasy swag that comes with this entire package.Read full review
