I bought this book because I read about it in The Simplicity of Homeschooling. I am halfway done with reading through the book but have skimmed through most of it, and I am so happy that I purchased this. Let me say that (and this is important), you do not need to be a homeschooling family to enjoy this book. I personally feel that if you are a parent it should be on your shelf. Mr. Trelease has done his research and he gives so many examples of the effects of reading aloud to your children. I honestly wish I could purchase a huge box of this book because I would give them away, that is how much I have enjoyed it. I have a number of book lists and books on books and therefore have a few favorites, like, Honey for a Childs Heart, but this book is an excellent resource on reading aloud. He covers everything from what age to start reading, to the types of books for appropriate ages and different ideas on how to read, things I haven't thought of. There are lots of studies included, and a great book list near the end. So far there is nothing that I have disliked about the book, it is one that I Highly, Highly recommend. Buy it! : )Read full review
I bought this book back when it was in first edition and my children were in pre-school. The first half of the book gave me the insight, motivation and foundation as to the importance of carving out the time to read a loud my children. The second portion of the book was an outstanding resource of books to read in a multitude of genres to them through out their entire youth. In addition to the wonderful memories of countless evenings of quality time spent together reading and discussing the plots and characters of the book and the closeness it fostered, these books provided a foundation of love of learning and the proverbial"window to the world". My children are now all young adults, and all were accepted to the most elite universities in the country. I attribute the benefits of all those hours of reading as the great jump start to their love of learning and ability to think critically. Now that my children are grown, I still buy this handbook, and give them as gifts at baby showers, along with my testimony that reading aloud builds wonderful bonds with your children and well as develops active minds. For all of us who were not read to as children, this is a resource to put great books at your fingertips. And it is never too late to start!Read full review
I LOVE this book! It is a must-have for teachers and parents who care about their child(ren)'s success in reading! It is easy and fun to read. It makes reading aloud fun for everyone!
Only got it because it's required for school, but it is a decent read for those becoming teachers. Make sure you get the right edition because this book had been modified a few times.
I bought this book for a class, and then ended up not needing it but it has proven to be a good read and a helpful book. I would recommend it to anyone both library science majors or recreational readers alike.
