I have this book in my collection of Africana. I wanted to introduce my grand children to the great classics of hunting and exploration, so I purchased a reading copy to give them. Of course I had to re-read the book before sending it. Col Paterson, an engineer by training, was thrust into a situation that required him to deal with a pair of man eating lions. The lions brought the building of the Uganda rail road to a halt with their predation of the human laborers engaged in the construction. Patersons experiences are well chronicled. It was very interesting to read Patterson and then Corbet in sequence. Both dealt with man eaters, one in Africa the other in India. The major difference being the background and prior experience each had with nature in its raw and wild form. I highly recommend this book. These reprints make the book available at a rather reasonable price.Read full review
This is scarier than I thought when it comes to being hunted and feeling the fear of being on the menu; the first group to finish the railway through this part of africa were literally the buffet for 2 lions. The second half of the book takes different tone and reviews the old time honored hunting traditions when game was not scarce but reaffrims now our vows to preserve wildlife; hunting can be a cruel sport no matter who or whom is the prey

Actually, I bought this book for my husband. He absolutely loved it and is interested in purchasing the sequel to this one. He said it was definitely a good read!
If you have ever seen the movie "The Ghost and The Darkness" This is the true story. The book gets even better after that story is over.
