I don't know how Jock Sturges does it, but he captures so much in his photographs. The innocence of youth, the angst of adolescence, the responsibilities of adulthood are communicated by a tilt of the subject's head, by the gleam of an eye, by the composition of the image. In a single photograph of a child, you see not only the child, but the adult she is to become. A wonderful book of memorable images!
the photos in this book are very good and tasefulley done . the photos are like the ones you may have taken of your own kids.
This is a masterwork by a very committed photographer. The subject matter is nude or semi - nude photographs of younger children & adults - photographed in black & white in naturist colonies in France or the U.S.A. If you can get over the subject matter the shots are sculptural & matter of fact -much in the style of Sally Mann ( but without the dead animals ! ) Jock Sturges was investigated by the FBI for his photography & seized photographs were eventually returned to him ( many were badly damaged in the process.) Apparently he always asks his former models, many of whom he has photographed for many years as they grow up, each time he uses a photograph of them in an exhibition. He has more recently done some colour work & some fashion work - but this is an early book without any of that, concentrating on black & white photographs. His original photographs sell for thousands of dollars now in art circles. If you can find them go for the hardback books as you will either love or hate the work & if you love it you will want the hardback to keep for ages. Not for everyone in the current rather mad climate of child protection, or overprotection depending on your viewpoint - but spectacular photographs none the less. This is a good introduction to his work. Chris.Read full review
