This book is the mother of all matte painting books! It speaks of everyone from Albert Whitlock to Zeaxis, the Ancient Greek painter who challenged Parrhasios, "they were rivals", to a challenge of painting perfect reflections. I can not put this book down?! I absolutely love it, it has so much history throughout the ages of matte painting beautifully written and the pictures are large, priceless, and well placed within the pages to accompany the paragraphs. I being a Matte Painter too have benefitted from reading this book. In many ways it is both educational and entertaining. It's forwarded by none other than George Lucas, It was in this book that I learned that the very first known matte painting shot was made in 1907 by Norman Dawn ASC, who improvised the crumbling California Missions by painting them on glass for the movie Missions of California. The book is both a blast and a variable cauldron of eye candy whipped up to perfection in such a way that you loose your self reading it for hours, well... that is if you have got a few to spare?.... It's no wonder that Art Professors all across the continent are recommending this to their students, and if they aren't, they should! Praise to Mark Cotta Vaz and Craig Barron for putting together such a masterpiece.Read full review
