John Ford's only full length film of the Civil War. Not Fords best, but still entertaining. John Wayne and William Holden's only teaming. The film did poor box office, but a John Ford "B" film is still better then most other directors "A" films. Based on a true event , Garrison's mission was to disrupt the Confederate supply lines in the South. Wayne takes on the Garrison role {They changed his name} and does what the North wanted him to do..A Southern Belle is thrown in as romantic adversary to Wayne's tough Yankee , but still a slam bang film at times..The one sad aspect of the film was the death of stunt man Fred Kennedy who had been one of the Ford company for years. A fall from a horse [ Kennedy had done it many times over the years} and it was right before Christmas and Ford had told Kennedy he could take a fall [ Kennedy had been after Ford to do a fall for some extra money}.
