The mother was so self centered it was hard to feel any sympathy for her. The loss of a child should result in a mother making sure her remaining children would survive in an emotional way so as to be healthy. She only cared about herself, resulting in a totally unhealthy family situation.

I was pleased with the book. I was a bit over anxious though to receive it and therefore don't care for media mailing. But I do understand that the cost of mailing does help to sell. I really enjoyed reading it and the fact that it was a hardcover with jacket. I suppose it doesn't matter to some if it's hardback, it just seems easier to handle and stays in better condition after several uses. The content of the book I would rate as "very good". The author is still new to me however, I found her to be very explicit. Overall I would recommend this book and the author to other readers.
Mitchard's descriptions are amazing -- I'm going through my own loss right now and I can totally connect with Beth. I am absent-minded, tired, and just generally mourning my loss. I also can relate with her want to "escape", knowing full well that whereever I go, the pain will just follow me. It was bitter-sweet that they got Ben back, and then had to let him go again to realize how much he was truly loved. I would recommend this book to anyone, but warn them that it is very difficult to set down!
I bought this book after reading a different book by this author. I started this book in the late afternoon, and couldn't put it down. The book kept me thinking, and wanting to know what was going to happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about family issues.
The writing is good. The character development is great. But the ;lot plods on. And the story is unrelentingly depressing.
