Of late I've been reading and learning as much as I can about this extraordinary time in American history. Not long ago while having conversation with a friend who has read much about the Civil War, I was encouraged to check-out Ken Burn's legendary "The Civil War." Aware that the series recently celebrated its twenty five year anniversary, I feel fortunate to have found the Anniversary Edition. Now the proud owner of this Civil War "gold standard," I savor every DVD. I couldn't be happier with the presentation, the photos, the letters, the stories, Shelby Foote's commentary, and its narration. What a find!

I remember when Ken Burns "The Civil War" came out, it was such a new and exciting way to learn about the Civil War. The character readings of actual participants brought a new humanity and intensity of both sides of the conflict, and Burns' talented filming and editing brought the still photographs to life, introducing a new standard for historical documentaries. I remember wanting to see this series over and over again, but the cost of the VHS video and DVD was so high when it first came out. It was so nice to see this great product reissued, with all the behind the scene extras, at such a reasonable price. It is a truly enjoyable was for students and history fans to learn about the Civil War from both sides of the Mason Dixon line.

This epic series only gets better with the new edition which adds additional material, particularly added interviews with Shelby Foote, the most revered of Burns' commentators. Though giving more perspective from the northern viewpoint, I believe Burns does a magnificent job in presenting a conflict which still resonates in some hearts today. Emphasis of the northern view of our great calamity is perhaps only natural, because the wealth of surviving material is much greater and "they won". Do not deny yourself the opportunity to learn more about a subject which, as Burns points out, helps define our American culture today. The majesty and scope of this great story as told from the words of its participants by recognizable voices of today is breathtaking. In my opinion, Burns demonstrates the righteousness of the conflict's outcome and its necessity for creating our modern society, regardless of where the sympathies of the viewer may lie.Read full review
Ken Burns did an excellent job in bringing America most distructive war to life. Since its first viewing on PBS in the 1990s this series has drawn millions of people from around the world to an epic period of American history that still verbreates to this day. Many of Mr. Burns' distractors have said he either excluded important small battles or simply got some it wrong. I say to them: when you're trying to tell a story that was a turning point in American history on film there has to be a blance. Any other research must be done by the viewer. This is a series the should be seen by all Americans and reqiuired reading by students of American history.
This purchase was a gift for my historian husband. He has always given high marks to the work of Ken Burns. I was amazed at how this documentary laid out the basic causes of the war, explained the events in plain language and made it clear for me the far reaching implications of this major US war. The stark black and white photos come to life with voice characterizations that brought a crucial humanity to this horrible war. The historians interviewed are true experts, but also brought a level human feelings to the events. It is a great work and I am so pleased I made this purchase.
