Okay, so I'll go ahead and start by saying that this movie was not exactly what I was expecting. The art and animation quality were all what I've come to expect from a Sudio Ghibli film, though there were a few parts that seemed kind of odd. My main complaint here is the story/directing. The story starts off well enough. It's fairly captivating, and certainly made me wonder where the story would go. As I watched, I kept wondering when previous elements introduced in the beginning would be addressed and eventually resolved, but they never really did. Instead, it was as though the beginning had nothing to do with the movie at all. It also didn't help that they spent very little time explaining the setting that the movie took place it. Since this was based off of a novel, I'm going to guess that it was assumed that anyone who watched would either have already read the novel, or would read it to fill in the many holes in the plot and storyline. Finally, the ending left much to be desired, and felt like they were just trying to lead into another movie. I was still waiting for loose ends to be tied up when the credits started running, and in the end, still didn't really have a very good grasp of the majority of details of the movie. It's like they intentionally threw in a bunch of fake Chekov's Guns or something. Anyway, while there was a lot to be desired in the storytelling and directing, it wasn't a BAD movie. If you're bored and a big fan of Miyazaki films, it is worth a watch. One thing though. I wouldn't recommend showing it to small children, since there are a few kind of disturbing/scary scenes.Read full review
This film changed my life and how I see the world. From the magical scenery to the fleshed-out characters - you will begin to see a little bit of yourself in each of them. Greed, slavery/injustice, vengeance, mortality, and power are some of the darker themes brought up throughout the film, and the character Sparrowhawk among other mentors, shows how to deal with these demons, by teaching and guiding a young sheltered prince, throughout the brutality of everyday life in a world very similar to our own. Such a magical film, with such beautiful artwork, it is sure to keep your attention for the full length and hours more pondering of the characters choices and how they relate to everyday reality. At times tears were shed while thinking of how the film applied to my life, and that is something I think many should try and do as they watch characters and how they relate to your own chance meetings in life. Please purchase this film and allow not only yourself, but your family to watch as well. You and your family will assuredly be in for a treat.Read full review
