Excellent performance by Steve McQueen as Tom Horn. The movie was interesting, although very scant on accuracy. Horn is portrayed as this poor cowboy, Regulator, trying to rid the old west of rustlers. Nothing is further from the truth. Tom Horn started out as a Pinkerton Man in his earlier career, but when he went out on his own, he worked for the Cattlemen's Association as nothing more or less than a paid killer. He assassinated many homesteaders for no other reason than to run off anybody who wanted to fence the so-called open plains. If your homestead had river or creek access, you could be killed just for using water that the cattle barons assumed was their property. When Horn was finally hanged in the early 1900's, it was for the murder of a fourteen year old boy that he shot in the back from ambush. While he was drunk, he admitted this crime and bragged about how he did it. At his trial, it was his own testimony, witnesses and taken down by a notary, that prosecutors used to convict him. Steve McQueen was one of my all time favorite actors, but lets not confuse the actor with the actual man.Read full review
Although deviating from historical accuracy at times, the movie Tom Horn captures the last years of this ex-Army Scout and Man Hunter as he was being "used" by Wyoming cattlemen to rid the area of thieves. Some of the same cattlemen and the local politically-motivated sheriff would later turn on Horn, needing a scapegoat, and convict him of a murder of which he was innocent. At the same time Horn personally felt that time had passed him by, longed for the Old West days, and allowed himself to be hung in 1903.

I feel that this is the finest performance of Steve McQueen's career. His quiet yet powerful portrayal of Tom Horn is nothing less than AMAZING !

A box office failure st the time of its release, has gained in stature in the last 40 years. Steve McQueen's next to last film. Well worth seeing.
