We were first introduced to this movie about 20 years ago in the late 80's when Linda Ronstadt was a very popular singer. Our family of 5 with 3 kids ranging from 6 to 10 always enjoyed an afternoon of popcorn and a movie. Little did we know we'd discovered our new favorite movie. The brilliant operetta by Gilbert & Sullivan has great singing-a witty ,funny story line ,and humour that appeals to young and old alike. This movie version of the Broadway play has several actors who's singing and dancing really are a treat. Kevin Kline is the Pirate King,Rex Harrison is Fredrick,Angela Lansbury plays his nursemaid ,Ruth and Linda Ronstadt is Maybel-the Major Generals oldest daughter who mutually falls for Frederick. The support cast are all gret ,too. The Keystone Cops have a few wonderful scenes with dancing and singing, the boisterous chorus of all the pirates along with their antics- The major General..his other 11 daughters.. You gotta see this movie! It's good clean family fun and I highly recommend it!Read full review
This has always been my favorite version of the classic Gilbert and Sullivan light opera. Kevin Kline is marvelous, showcasing both his voice and his acrobatic dancing. Rose is magnificent as the Major General and of course I have to send out a hometown holler to Linda Ronstadt who I think is equal to the task vocally if over shadowed somewhat by the actors and of course there is the incomparable Tony Azito and the incredible voice of Rex Smith. All in all, a movie I will watch again and again and I even have "With Catlike Tread" bookmarked on my computer.
I bought this video tape, now a collectors item, because I grew up with this musical and have always loved the songs. Gilbert and Sullivan were very ahead of their time with their humorous stories and music. Of coarse this version was updated for a modern audience, and it was done perfectly, thats what makes it so watchable. We always rented it, but it's gotten harder to find, so I decided to finally purchase the VHS, the only available DVD is imported, so unless they make a domestic one this is the only way to see this movie. I was quite lucky to find it.
The only thing that could make this better is to have it on DVD. This is one of the funniest musiacals out there for the whole family. Kevin Kline, Rex Smith, Linda Ronstadt, & Angela Landsbury are amazing in their performances. Class A-1 production!!!! If you want to have a laugh & some fun with all ages, this movie is for you!!
This fun romp through a very merry operetta was well sung by Linda, Kevin Kline, and Angela Lansberry. It is a particularly successful rendition of their hit, touring live company of the same name. I saw them both; this film is better than the stage one as it is even sung and staged better.
