Synopsis
A mysterious creature known as the Once-ler describes how his greed and lack of ecological concern caused a serious pollution problem. When the Once-ler ignores the warning of the wise Lorax to mend his careless ways, the result is an environmental disaster. Dr. Seuss skillfully weaves his humorous words and pictures with a genuine message to readers that it's up to them to protect the earth. Color illustrations accompany the rhyming text.

The Once-ler describes the results of the local pollution problem.

The Lorax by Dr. Suess, Random House, NY, 1971, First Library Edition.

This edition was published in 1971 simultaneously with the trade edition and thus is also a true first edition. Only intended for use in libraries, this copy has no library markings making it even rarer find.

As with the Trade edition the back cover lists 32 titles the last title being The Lorax and I Can Draw it Myself at the end of the Beginner Book list.

The Rudolf Flesch quote is in pink rather than yellow and the ISBN is in error stating 394-82337-5 when the true ISBN for the Library Edition was 394-92337-5.

The copyright page shows no ISBN or copyright number.

These identifying points are consistent with the copy shown in the Children's Picturebook Collecting blog found on the website 1stedition.net.
(Contact us directly if you have any problem finding the specific page. We are no longer allowed to add a direct link to the listing.)

As with all early Lorax editions the infamous Lake Erie line is present.

The book's pictorial boards show some wear, The corners are bumped with exposed cardboard. The edge of the spine along the front cover has edge wear and paper lifts. The edge of the spine on the back cover is open half way up the book.

The interior hinges are quite sound and the pages are free of any markings. On the inside cover are the remnants of three pieces of scotch tape.
