This album marked an era, the era when the cars decided to slowly leave the music scene, which happened after the next studio release, but the inspiration this album has, is that it proved The Cars were prepared for any direction music wanted to go, and on this outing, they went there! With chart success after success, The Cars wondered why they were playing to empty auditoriums? A sign of the times, which they didn't have the future predicting ability to see then , but many bands were doing the same , except for holdouts like the Rolling Stones, and other heavy hitters who were part of the big arena scene before this album was conceived . This album finesses every spectrumof Rock and Roll song and mood that one could aspire to mimic, and the Cars did it with their usual talent of tour de force , and this album, then, went to the top to prove it , with top 40 hit after hit ! This is a classic, and can be enjoyed from beginning to end without one song seeming out of place, or off rhythm ! Enjoy this superb showcase of the Group known as The Cars, it's a classic that will never be topped in style or function!Read full review
I feel the 80s were divided by pre and post 1984 . The Cars embraced synthesizers and many fans didnt care for this album . Ric Ocasek also stated that he didnt really like performing live or touring . I love this album and I saw the supporting tour . They played the album and I thought it was a great show ( I was also about 14 soo....) The video for Hello Again was amazing ,too . I can understand fans that prefer the earlier more guitar driven material but I love it all . From the cover art to the videos to , of course, the music , this album will grow on you . Probably don't hurt that I lost my virginity to this also !
Shame on you if you don't have this. If you don't, then go dig up the clams and trade 'em in for a piece of rock history. Great musical modern day Americana. Even the album cover has become reconizable. The rich combo of the Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr team shows they certainly left on a high note. Not unlike the previous albums, yet vastly different in their progression within the band's sound itself, and complete with the radio cuts from the mid 80's that rocked the radio then, and still do now. And the ones they didn't play on the radio are just as good. MH070608FR1231EDT
Most of the songs were good on it except for a few slow songs.Radio Stations were playing it alot in the Summer of 1984! I had it on Cassette but wore it out and never went out and bought it till I saw it on Ebay. After this album the Cars went Solo with Ric Ocasik doing an album. They had another album later on with shake it up on it.Heartbeat City will always be my favorite!
Produced by R. John "MUTT" Lange, great classic 80's songs...mainly, song video.."DRIVE" w/Benjamin Orr.!!
