This movie reflects how hard life was for men in the old days, but even worse for a woman trying to farm large acreage. Little Jo dresses like a man and tries to fit in with the menfolk, but has a really hard time pretending to be a male. At the end, Little Jo gets sick and her neighbor takes her to the doctor, but she dies anyway. Soon after she dies, the doctor starts to undress her to get ready for burial. Surprise! Surprise! She is a woman. The next part of the story just infuriates me even IF this is a movie. The doctor runs to the saloon and tells everyone that Jo is a woman. Ok, she is a woman~~whoopity do~~what else do they need to know? Instead, the men follow the doctor back inside to get an eye full of the naked corpse~~~that really ticked me off. No respect for the dead!!!!!Read full review
Visually beautiful, interesting story about a woman who poses as a man in the Old West...but VERY sad and depressing! Poor Jo just can't catch a break. A lot of bad things happen to her, other innocent people are slaughtered, and then Jo dies...which I guess is the way things were in the Old West, but it is hard to "like" a movie that is such a downer, no matter how well-made. Suzy Amis is not very convincing as a man, and even the other characters keep commenting that Jo is a bit strange, they just never notice that "he" has no facial hair and looks rather effeminate. An OK movie if you don't mind a sad ending.
Unusual but great little story / film.
