For many collectors, vintage and otherwise, there is the 1909-11 T206 White Border set, and there are all other sets. The set is one of only a handful that is recognizable to those outside the "hobby", as it contains the most valuable of all cards: the legendary Honus Wagner, of which the finest example known last traded hands at close to $3 million, and the second most valuable and therefore rare, the Eddie Plank. Several things draw collectors to T206. First and foremost, it can be a challenge to both the novice and the experienced collector alike. Whether collecting "fronts", "backs", Hall-of-Famers, team sets or otherwise, the possibilities are endless. But without a doubt, THE TWO CARDS in this set are the Wagner and the Plank. To the best of my knowledge these two rarities have NEVER been offered together. Both graded Authentic by PSA. The Wagner was altered many years ago, before these cards were in such high demand and brought such astronomical prices. The owner innocently wanted to improve the imagine, and did not intend to deceive any future buyer. This card has since been returned, to the best of its ability, to its original condition. It was NEVER RESTORED, there have never been any fibers added to or removed from it. The offered example of the Plank delivers outstanding, radiant quality in its blue-backgrounded portrait illustration. The top and bottom edges concede irregularities in cut (a bowed effect at the top, abbreviation at the bottom), but these barely detract from the piece’s visual essence. Additional and natural, heavier wear is manifested at the corners and at a portion of the caption area (which also reveals a small, stray slit). A tiny wrinkle can be seen at the top-left edge. The "Sweet Caporal - 150 subjects" advertisement adorning this sought-after card’s reverse boasts wonderful clarity in its red inking, and the surround is nicely toned with a few spots of mild staining. None of the card’s nominal discrepancies threaten the piece’s superior and warm overall aesthetic. This is a tremendous example of the White Border issue's key Plank rarity – boasting a center illustration of NM character – and a singular card that cannot fail to win the viewer’s admiration. Most collectors begin their Monster Set with commoners, with aspirations of someday, acquiring a Plank, and dream of owning a Wagner. This rare opportunity affords someone the once-in-a-lifetime chance of starting at the top. *** I will entertain offers on either card, but would love to keep this pair together. SERIOUS OFFERS ONLY, otherwise, I will be forced to set an automatic DECLINE on offers lower than a certain amount, and that will not allow you to contact me on only one of the cards. |
