Kushiel's Legacy is one of my all time favorite book series to return to. The author builds a whole new, magical world out of our known geography. The story is compelling and sexy and sad and joyous and such a well crafted tapestry of characters and places. She paints a vivid pictures of places we thought we already knew.

I have read all 6 books in the Kusciel's series and Jacqueline Carey is my favorite author! She is a pro at putting together a detailed story that leaps from the pages. I could not put them down once I started and eagerly awaited the next book in the seires. She leads the reader through an ornate tale with adventure and a unique twist to romance. Thoughtful and inspiring at the same time. A must read set of books for the serious reader who knows a great author and treaures it as it should be.
While the book may be somewhat lengthy, it is well worth the read if you enjoy historical fantasy with an erotic twist to it. Some may find it distasteful that Phedre is an anguissette, meaning she derives sexual pleasure from pain. Others (like me) will find the book intriguing because of it. The book carries you through different kingdoms and provides no shortage of fascinating details about their mythologies and customs. The politics in the story can be tricky to follow at times, but are explained thoroughly enough that it makes sense. The characters are believable as well as likable, and Carey writes in a manner that makes you want to read on. This book is very well put together and was a pleasure to read. I'm looking forward to finishing the rest of the books in the series.
At first this book frustrated me, Phedre seems to develope into a typical Mary Sue character and some of the story seems to come out of nowhere. However, I found that I could not put this book down. Joscelin Verreuil, Phedre's bodyguard, stirred my curiosity to continue the book. He leveled Phedre to a point where she seemed more human and real. Their love story is beautiful and forced me to continue the series, which surprisingly seems to only get better as I go.
I've read this book cover to cover many a time and I have not tired of it. Carey's writing style is poetic and graceful. While some may be bothered by her writing style, I found that it added a sense of depth to this world. The characters are not just developed, they grow within this story. Overall, this is a wonderful read that I would recommend to anybody looking for an intrancing fantasy.
