This interesting historical novel tells the life of Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. It is well written and adheres to a great extent to historical fact, although some license is taken with some of the characters. One case in point is the character of Willie Preston who, in the book, plays a part in many of the early battles of the Civil War, when in fact he left home to serve the South only about a month before his untimely death at the age of seventeen. The portrayal of the events is from the point of view of the South, giving greater understanding of the thoughts and feelings of the Southern citizens. I would recommend this book to those interested in the Civil War and it's heroes. Being a novel, it is able to bring the people and the times to life much more vividly than would a history. Mr. Dwyer's characters draw the reader in; it is possible to feel both the joy and sorrow of the characters.Read full review
