Martin Duberman's book "Stonewall" (1993) was not exactly taken too well by the real people who were involved with the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street, NYC; or the actual historical 1969 Stonewall Rebellion. In fact, many of the people that are viewed and portrayed as drag queens in the book and in the show never did one drag performance: they were or are transgender or transsexual. Like the book is ahistorical, so is the film. So on with the film: In it a flaming hustling drag queen moves into Greenwich Village in 1969, just before the actual historical Stonewall Rebellion. There s/he uncovers the truth about people's gender and sexual prejudices. It is made into a musical comedy much of which is based on the life of Sylvia Rivera, the Puerto Rican-American transgender "Mother of the GLBT Revolution." Though Rivera is given no credit and has since died, at Rivera's funeral that point was most clearly raised. Duberman was barely tolerated. The film, however, is a gaudy, flamboyant, sequenced, musical and far more full of fun than real life was for drag queens, transgender, transvestite, and transexxual people in 1969. Hateful socio-cultural contexts haven't changed all that much since then~Read full review
Depiction of Stonewall events is done very well. Film and characters captured exactly what folks lived through in this moment of time.
